I love it. I have always turned off my cars at red lights etc because I prefer the quiet. Never had to replace a starter or battery prematurely either. Done this the entire life of my cars, both at 170k plus miles and owned since new, and not a single problem from doing that. Neither of mine have ESS but I have driven cars that do and I absolutely love it. So relaxing to have the engine off. Nice and quiet.

I didn't read the previous 61 messages, but the easiest way to explain it to a middle schooler is:

Government creates ridiculous mandates.
Corporation games the system.
Consumer pays the price.

So, OP asks for a technical discussion and the forums respond by whining.

this isn’t Facebook.

The whole question revolves around how long the vehicle is stopped. If stop and go traffic it's no help, if long stops then the idling waste is reduced. For school kids, I would draw a curve showing where the benefits materialize with a photo of the SS off button illuminated on the right side.

Hi Eric:

I respectfully take factual, not personal issue with all centering around vehicle stop time.

Certainly, this is the single most important thing, but to examine it alone will skew ESS systems as being better than they actually are.

What also must be considered is that the battery running that ESS event can be recharged with far less additional fossil fuel than that already been consumed to run the engine, than that saved while the engine is off at a traffic light.

Exactly my point, the curve will clearly show at what point the SS system becomes economically viable for the particular user. Once that point is made start adding in variables and eyes will light up as they discover how models work.
I leave mine engaged during commuting, I've run the numbers and they add up. When the battery fails, I'll have a decision to make tho.

lol.... a thread goes where a thread goes. If we're lucky it finds its way back on course as I think happened here. This is especially true here for discussions of ESS.

While nobody wanted to discuss the pure physics of ESS more than me, I get people's sentiments here. ESS system that saves very small amounts of gas, that's got plenty of green house issues of its own, that forces some to accept solutions they don't want, that on its best day can only poorly be administered by the EPA, and whose implementation on the JL leaves much to be desired.

For the select few obnoxious old farts that hate it so much they can’t help but tell everyone, it’s very easy to disable permanently.

Oh, ok, got it. I get your angle. Stop time is a fair metric because it not only affects fuel savings but battery depletion. :)

I work for a company that makes batteries, please, for my future benefit, do not disable.

In all seriousness, after a few days in this thing, it's the least intrusive I've experienced. As an added benefit, the lag feels like a launch when it hits lol
