Explaning ESS to a middle schooler

I'm now in the habit of placing the gear shift lever into 'M' when approaching a parking spot. No more accidental ESS events when parking.

How does that workaround function when the vehicle is being parallel parked and reversing is required?

ESS is disabled if you have the gear shift lever in any position except 'D'. So parallel parking wouldn't be a problem as long as you pulled up and stopped in 'M' to begin with. Otherwise ESS would engage and immediately would restart the engine as soon as you put it in 'R'.

One thing I noticed is that they have hysteresis built into the disable algorithm. If you stop when in 'M' ESS won't engage when you put it into 'D'. You have to satisfy the 5mph threshold to retrigger it's enable.

We'll see about the 8 speed auto durability. I know several on the powerwagon forums (the ZF early adopters along with Jeep) are failing now around 100k-120k miles similar to the old 66/68RFEs

I've had to rebuild two of those trans so I guess we'll see. If the ZF's can go 120k+ which we should be seeing right about now or into '23 I'll prob go auto next time for the last time unless they force it down my throat.

If I had a ZF I would be unsealing that 'lifetime' trans and replacing the fluid like any other auto.
