I heard rumors that EPA is sending out letters to JL/Ram EcoDiesel owners to do an emissions test in exchange for $500.

Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors?

3rd party testers doing spot checks to ensure FCA is in compliance with EPA regulations concerning diesel engines in the US, so there are no more potential VW diesel shenanigans. The owners do not have to participate and these are not gov't officials coming after tuners. Unless an owner who has deleted is stupid enough to turn in their vehicle for testing lol.

It’s not just an Audi/VW thing. Our 2016 Grand Cherokee diesel was part of a disappointing EPA crusade. After two required reflashes, sending in the required paperwork three times, multiple calls to customer disservice, and waiting for about eight months, we finally got a check for almost $3500 as a “settlement”. Now we have noticeably less power, the fuel economy has dropped by about 10%, and the check-engine-light is on most of the time.

FCA had to pay the settlement, but we feel like the EPA should have paid it, as we loved our diesel until the EPA decided to “help“ us. (On long trips we consistently averaged over 32 mpg before the help. Pretty impressive for a heavy SUV full of stuff.)

Exactly my experience with Audi's.

Two 3.0L diesels that were absolutely wonderful both power and economy.

After the fix they were down in power, down in mileage, terrible performance when cold, and resale value down 40%.

Audi would refuse to warranty/service without the fix done so forced into it.

Audi cut us a check for $10,500 each which was nowhere close to addressing the value loss.

I really hope the same end for the EcoDiesel doesn't happen.

You chose to send your diesel in for EPA directed reflashes? That's crazy talk, of course they were going to detune it, they exist to remove non-electric engines.
They made the reflash hard to refuse., as it was required to get the "deal", which included the check and a lifetime warranty on the engine. The window to make the claim was limited, of course, and I suspect the reflash was inevitable if the vehicle was brought in for warranty service of any kind, so compliance seemed like the lesser of two evils. Of course, nobody said, "... and when you get the reflash you'll lose power, lose economy, and the engine warning light will remain on."

We've brought the Jeep into the dealer twice since the last reflash to address the engine warning light problem. The light is off when we pick up the Jeep, and back on within fifty miles. It's a colossal pain in the ass to bring the Jeep in for service, and they obviously can't fix it, so the new plan is to get rid of it as soon as we can buy the new hybrid version, which is supposed to be orderable after the first of the year.

So far we have one YouTube video and no other user confirmed that they have seen a similar letter. I am not calling BS, but would be interesting to have at least one more confirmation besides that YouTube video.

Govt wants diesels off the road, otherwise how can they shove these rolling crematoriums (EVs) down the peoples throats?

Look at the pic below and tell me the Govt doesn't want you dead if anything happens

VW :)!

Pre-Tesla, pre-Dieselgate, we are maybe talking 2006-2009 time frame, the consensus was that Clean Diesel was the Green Technology. The topic was always CO2 reduction and renewable fuels either via biodiesel or synthetic diesel. Around 2015 when dieselgate happened the narrative turned almost on a dime and Clean Diesel suddenly became "dirty diesel", all only because VW cheated and failed to manage NOx emissions, all while getting 40+mpg (less CO2) and having tail pipe completely clean from soot (DPF). It wouldn't have been a problem if they had SCR and DEF tank, which got added on late model year TDIs.

Let me get this straight:
  • Clean Air Act specifies acceptable level of pollutants that gas/diesel vehicles must comply with in the United States.
  • When purchasing a vehicle, you are also purchasing emissions compliance, power, mileage, etc.
  • Multiple automobile companies were caught cheating emissions tests worldwide, and the EPA forced them to update their US vehicles to comply.
  • As a result vehicles lost power/mileage
Regardless of how you feel about the Clean Air Act requirements or their results, why isn't everyone pissed at the automobile manufacturers? They're the ones that knowingly sold non-compliant vehicles. The reduction in power/mileage wouldn't have happened if they weren't cheating...
