How often is it replaced?
I just had an oil change and had the dealer replace it at 16k miles.

You replace when it gets dirty enough. Greatly depends on the local environment. I'm sure I can wait far longer here in the Northeast than someone rolling around and wheeling in Arizona every day.

Maintenance schedule in the owners manual recommends a 30K interval. For my area my filters have always looked good at 30K on any car I have ever owned.

Air filters (until the point it clogs or tears) will become more efficient as they are in use. Unless being operated in an extremely dusty environment, most air filters can go 50K miles without any issues.

16K is too soon to change it unless in an extreme environment.

An air filter restriction gauge is the best way to monitor air filter health:

Anecdotally, our Honda Pilot started misfiring at 60k on the original air filter. It actually went into limp mode because of this.
As others said, it will depend on your use but 16k is early.

I checked mine at the 30k mileage recommendation and was surprised as to how clean it was, not perfect but in decent shape. I decided to wait until the pollen season has finished and will check it again.

I replaced the original OEM filter at 30K, per the prescribed interval noted in the Owner's Manual. The filter has obvious service life remaining, so I put it aside as an emergency spare.

If you off-road offer, then I would recommend changing sooner, I usually clean mine at every other oil change, I just blow it out with my air compressor and clean the housing if needed, I’ve seen some at 30 K and they still look good

This question of when to change the air filter reminded me of one time with my old Ford Explorer.

I was a volunteer fireman and had a tap out for a call. I jumped into my Explorer and started out but whenever I got above about 10 MPH it would die. I knew I wouldn't get to the station in time, so I limped into the Ford dealer. I thought it must be a problem with the fuel injector. They called me back in within an hour, and on the guys desk was a quart jar filled with yellow jacket carcasses'. They blocked enough air to starve the engine whenever much above idle. Strange how they found there way into the housing in enough numbers to cause the problem.

A few years ago, I got stung while standing next to my shed. A quick inspection revealed no nests in the eaves, etc., so where were they coming from?

I eventually determined that there was a large, pancake-shaped yellowjacket nest under one of the decorative shutters. Unscrewing the shutter, spraying the nest and getting away quickly required practiced, fast movement, but I got it done.

Every year, it seems that it's something different. Thus far, carpenter bees appear to be this year's bother. ?

For $31. dollars installed I considered it a no brainer.
I spend more for gas.

They are crafty little devils. I found an underground nest of them once, right below my kitchen window. I thought I'd drown them out, so got a water hose and trained it on the opening. Immediately a swarm flew out and attached me repeatedly while I beat a hasty retreat. I waited till night when they were unaware and bug sprayed them while they slept. Revenge is sweet.

I have to admit, after reading your comment, I was really scratching my head... huh? What?? ?
Then I found this Donaldson article that explained it. Makes sense!
I had '96, and '99 Chevy & GMC's that had those Donaldson restriction monitors upstream of the air filter.

Mileage has pretty much nothing to do with the need to replace your air filter. On my vehicles, they get checked at every oil change and replaced as needed. Probably every 3 or 4 years.

I definitely wouldn't pay to have it installed but for the price of an air filter on Rock Auto I replace mine every 15k miles, honestly. I buy 5 or 6 at a time to save money on shipping.
