I would move on to a different sealant that has an "instant" seal. I end up using either teflon tape or Titeseal compound, which is non-hardening. Mainly, because that's always handy. I don't like putting in a pipe plug completely dry. Those things can get difficult to remove if installed dry.
Good advice... reality is, one of the main reasons for using Teflon tape, is as an aid to help prevent a froze plug / a plug that does not want to come loose.

My go to these days is Pink Teflon. Is not negatively impacted by the fluid and it is far denser then lats say yellow Teflon I used to use..

Had to LOL just now.... I have Valvoline 75/140 pouches being delivered today from Amazon.

SO, I just asked Alexa, "Where's my stuff" ...

.........Alexa replies /says ---> a package with gear oil will be delivered today by 9pm ..

....THEN ---> she goes on to tell me that it is recommended to remove the fill plug on the differential before removing the drain plug... she says this info was based on a customer review..

Even Alexa is spewing diff fluid replacement hints...

.

If only Alexa could answer all the Jeep JL battery related questions from this forum with brevity and clarity, that would be something ?

Yes that was my sarcastic point. A few people including you have answered correctly and repeatedly before the new wave of self appointed ”exspurts” arrived.

Wow, I just finished reading the 39 pages of this thread over the past 1+ hours. So, should I use 75W-90 or 75W-140 for the rear? Haha - just kidding.

My wife has a 2020 Rubicon Recon JLU. M220 rear axle and no tow package. The owner's manual specifies 75W-85 for both axles. I just bought a 4 pack of Valvoline 75W-90 off Amazon for $50.36, to be delivered around 4:00am tomorrow. We have a MaxCare extended warranty and I'm going stay close to what the recommended fluid is so they cannot nitpick if a warranty claim ever comes up relating to the axles.

It'll be the first time the diff fluid has been changed, currently a little over 77,000 miles. I imagine the rear will be pretty dark by now. :) I checked and it does have both the fill and drain plugs.

If you submerge the pinion or axle seals, you should change it soon afterward. I have 36K miles on my JLUR and the rear has been changed at least 3 times and the front has been changed ... well, so many times I can't recall, just because I was working on the locker. Always 75w140.

Dana themselves recommend 75W-140 for mine, which to my way of thinking is a bit more important than what the Owner's Manual suggests...e.g., the thin-sauce 75W-85 in the front end. That was just FCA's engineers trying to eek out that last 10th of a MPG, via fractionally reduced rolling resistance of a [too] thin gear oil. Longevity and the use of the proper maintenance fluids, etc. will always be more important to me than whatever the EPA would like to see on my fuel mileage display.

The manual also states that the transmission fluid is a "Lifetime fill". Nope. Nothing is "lifetime". ZF, who designed the 8HP (850RE) in our Jeeps, recommends a fluid and filter change at ~60K miles. Once again, I'm listening to the original designer/manufacturer of the component, and not to a self-interested entity that just wants to get me to the warranty expiration date.

Yes, change the diff oils in the Missus' Jeep ASAP. You're past due.

It's my wife's JLU and her dd. It has never been driven off-road since she bought it over 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure the axles have never been underwater.

Anyway, the oil arrived on my front porch at 6:00am this morning, so I'll be changing it in a few more hours. My Ring camera showed the Amazon driver got a little wet from my motion detection deer deterrent sprinkler. :)

I've done plenty offroading in my '24 JLUR and it's now at 10k miles. I'm thinking maybe 15k to change mine. If I don't, then definitely by 30k when the manual trans fluid is suggested changing. It sucks that the diffs don't have a drain plug on the '24 JLs, so I may use this as an excuse to change out the diff covers. Hopefully that won't F with the warranty in any way.

It's almost as fast to pull the cover, maybe a minute or two longer, but worth looking inside and checking for debris. The gasket is reusable
