All the info you need is in Differential Oil

The TL;DR is “it depends on if you have LSD or not.”

Like you, I have a Rubicon and I used 75w140 in the rear and 75w90 in the front. I used Royal Purple. No additive needed. Super easy job. If you get 4qts you’ll have leftover. It’s fine to mix weights if you’re stingy and want to use every drop of 3qts.

Anyhow, do go look at that thread as it has all the questions answered.

Royal Purple ROY01300 Max GEar 75W90 Synthetic Lube, 1 Quart https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007QGT34/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FaNwEbNX2J59Y

I changed mine in both axles on my 2019 JLUR at 5K miles and the rear was the worst I have ever seen (you can search for the UOA test results I posted). I replaced the OEM oil with Amsoil Severe Gear--75W-110 in the front and 75W-140 in the rear.

It took 1.3QTs in the front and 1.6QTs in the rear.

Thanks for the reply! So no friction modifier additive needed on my 2018 jlur?

I just changed my rear and front differential oil in my 19 Sahara. I have a 30 front and a 44 rear.
Front still had an amber color and rear was really dark.
I bought it with 23,800 miles and did not know if it was changed before I had it. It’s at 25,000 now.
The rear drain plug magnet, I had several larger chunks... if you all tell me to send it, I’ll send it. But I want to make sure it doesn’t need to be looked at.

The color of the oil (front and rear) are pretty normal, and metal filings are normal too, even in heavy amounts--to a degree.

However, chunks of metal that size are not normal. Did you remove the rear cover when you changed the oil or only the drain plug? After seeing the chunks, I would have pulled the cover and checked all of the gears. BTW, are the chunks "solid" or just clumps of filings?

If you do not have an extended warranty, if it were mine, I did take it in. I would probably do that anyway. Sorry man.

I did not take it off since I do not have a gasket sealer. It is still under factory warranty so I will be taking it in tomorrow. I figured the amount of large chunks was a no go. Just a little peeved I just spent the money on Royal Purple. Lol

Just FYI the gaskets on mine (D44 front and rear) are rubber and reusable--no sealer needed. Keep us posted.

PS...any noises coming from the axle?

Good to know.

No noise that I am hearing at all. The only reason I decided to change it was because I was in here and read to change the rear at least every 10K-15K miles. And I was 10K over that and didn’t know if it was changed before I bought it.

Well, that may be good news. Maybe Dana/FCA just did a crappy job of cleaning up after the machining work and the gears are not damaged.

That is not normal and I would be concerned. I’d pull the cover and see what is going on.
