Ive looked at a few different threads on the forum now and still cant draw a clear answer as most are running Rubis with e lockers but still should not require limited slip additive, but some of the bottles like Amsoil and Valvoline say “limited slip” the delema is i have a ‘18 JLUS Dana 30 m186 front Dana 35 m200 rear no limited slip. Are these gear oils still safe to use in my diffs even tho they may already contain the LS friction modifier? Then do i run 75w90 front and 75w140 rear? Thank you to anyone in advance..

What you do is use 1 quart of the 75W90 and two quarts of the 75w140.

Using 2 quarts of 75W140, do your rear diff first with the 75w140 and you will have some fluid left over.

Now, do your front with the 1 quart of 75w90 and since you will be a tad short of fluid, use the left over 75w140 to fill the diff, till it drips out.

Per Royal Purple, and Valvoline there is absolutely no reason you cannot mix the two product weights together. I spoke with their reps on the phone..

What I do is buy the 4 pack, Valvoline Flexfill 75W140 and singles of the Valvoline 75W90.

Hint: Be sure when you do your diffs (easy to do) to always loosen the fill plug before you drain the diff using the diff drain plug.

New to Jeeps, and loving the new Willys. My manual says to use SAE 75W85 in both diffs, and the rear should have the additive. Not sure if it has already been answered, but I'm seeing a lot of numbers that are not those. (ie. 75W140 in the rear) I want to do the rear at 5K and have some confusion about wandering from the manual. Clarification please??

Thanks

If you tow, step up to the higher viscosity 75w-140, if you have the LSD, you need the friction modifier, now many of these fluids already have it in the oil. Note you can use a gear oil with the friction modifier in an open non LSD diff.

I throw 75w-140 in the rear and 75w-90 in the front. Used Redline because I have a 5 gallon pail of each. Amsoil makes excellent gear lubes too. Dont forget to change the fluid in your T-case, have Amsoil ATF in mine.

I only tow a small utility trailer on occasion. I think I'll go with the Valvoline 75W90 with the additive as that is closest to the manual.

Yes, it has the tow package. It's a 2021. Also has the LSD.

You have the Tow package!!! DO, do use 75W140 in the rear.... Follow instructions here...

What many here do, is buy 2 bottles of 75W140 and 1 bottle of 75W90.

Now, you do your rear differential first and you will have left over 75W140.

Now, you do your front differential with the 1 bottle of 75w90 and also use what you need of the left over 75W140 to fill / top off the front differential.

Doing the proceeding saves you $..... saves you having leftover gear oil lying around...

For the record, gear oil companies state that there is no issue mixing the 75w90 with the 75w140 but to keep in mind how it impacts viscosity.

I just bought a case of this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KB5LTJM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (4 containers in the case) and also 2 bottles of this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HQGCVG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
These 2 orders, will give me what I need to do the 2 differentials twice. I save LOTS, going this route. In the end, it costs me about $55.00 total, to do the fluid change on both differentials.

Also, with the Flexfill packages, getting the oil in the diffs is easy easy.. And that single bottle, I'm using that is not in a Flexifill package ......, Well, I will pour that bottle into one of the empty Flexifill packages and squeeze that in also....

---->By the way, Royal Purple and Valvoline, both have the necessary additives, so no need to add Mopar additive. IF the vehicle needs no additive, it is aok to use gear oil that has additive..

@garyji

Also, it is kinda foolish to do just one diff at a time..... on different days.... There is clean up involved.... you are under there anyway, so do both at the same time...

Remember you also need to use Yellow... again YELLOW color Teflon Tape on the drain and fill plugs.. Do not use white Teflon tape as oil will destroy it.

Hmm, I’ve never used teflon tape on diff drain plugs, and never had an issue. I actually ground down my diff drain plugs slightly to prevent them catching on rocks.

@Bikemobile

To each his own.... I myself, would never suggest / recommend that a guy/gal not use Yellow Teflon tape or a sealer that does the same on the drain and fill bolts.... same same on motorcycles, farm equipment, aircraft, etc....

When I did mine, I used Permatex Hight Temp Thread Sealant 59214 . Although, I've never really had an issue on my previous vehicles when I've forgotten to use it.

Permatex Hight Temp Thread Sealant 59214..... That'll do it...

As an active, young guy in the very early 60's, I often forgot to use a condom... I thought I never had an "issue"...

... and... and, recently .....over these last few years, I have only had 3 call me, since all this Ancestry DNA stuff became popular...
