My warning message popped up today. So you will get a warning 500 miles before the engine will not restart. These miles were not very accurate. Mine dropped about 40 miles in approx 10 miles travelled. I had already purchased some DEF so I’ll be filling up tonight.

it will still start but will go into limp mode (max speed about 5mph) until you add more

If these emission is anything like the ones in my Peterbilt.... cold frigid temperatures drastically effect def usage. The colder it is... the more DEF you will use

There is no problem going that low on DEF there are several warnings that provide plenty of time to fill and even when you get to limp mode you are not doing any damage and it will force you to fill if you want to go faster than 5mph.

For what it is worth I just bought a new Ram 3500 Diesel the DEF was less than 1/2 full when delivered.

Supposedly, according to the Ram forums, topping off the tank in the winter won’t cause any problems. The tank is designed to expand for freezing DEF. It has heater elements that will thaw it.

Also, way too many people like to use scare tactics when talking about DEF. It isn’t some special/rocket/dynamite type of product that is dangerous/sensitive to use. People say the shelf life severely limits how much you should put in during the summer months. I live in PHX and see 120° temps. I have a 2015 Ram and add in 2.5 gal when ever my gauge reads 3/4 full. I always get 2.5 gal in easily and this has NEVER degraded to the point of the computer not liking the concentration. I put on roughly 10k miles a year on that truck, so not driven a bunch, but does sit for some time with DEF in the tank. So, my best advice....drive the damn thing and refill when you need to. Don’t believe the hype.

For the record, my 3.0 came from the dealer new with the DEF low warning message. Of course the dealer filled it, but it came from the factory with very little DEF

Yea I’m thinking they definitely (pun intended) need to be topped off at delivery. Still will be interesting to see how far they get under normal load when they are visually verified to be full.

Something tells me neither you nor anyone else around here has the balls to test your hypothesis when both the warning message and the supplement manual petty clearly state it’s not going to turn on. I do look forward to the day both the EPA and a major manufacturer are sued over these ridiculous DEF software requirements which are bound to hurt someone sooner or later.

So yeah I’m not sure if it was full or not the gauge said it was when I picked it up the fuel was full and def was full the warning came on around 800 miles it said in 480 miles engine won’t restart but it never changed from that 480 even though we drove another 100 plug miles. When I got home it held a 2.5 gallon bottle so idk what’s going on we love this diesel so much more than our 3.6 I’m not even up set about it but it definitely needs to be addressed. And the mileage sux 11.8 average hand calculation pulling 1900 lbs I didn’t buy it for mpg’s I bought it for torque.

Sounds like the emissions controller and DEF tank sensor are not communicating for some reason. Will be interesting to see if your towing fuel mpg improves as the engine reaches peak compression through the break-in...and how that number compares to a 3.6 JLUR towing the same load.

Well our fully built JKs was not even as far as pulling they was a no go the worst that’s why we decided on the diesel I can go ahead and say absolutely no comparison the diesel wins we will see after it get built up in the next few weeks but I bet it won’t have any problems

70-80 I kept looking down and find myself doing 80 so I would slow back down some also noticed oil temp at 256 at on point but didn’t get a pic of it but was only at the half way mark on gauge so I see a bigger coolers in my future

I'll do it. I'll just time it right where we'll be near home. When it gets down around 100 miles I'll take it for a spin. And bring it on back to the house to coincide with the 0 miles of DEF left. If it doesn't shut down or do something funky, I'll drive it around some more and see what it's limp mode is like. These are good things to know anyhow.

We were not discussing what happens in the last mile it is prior to that the vehicle will go into Limp mode just the same as their big brother Ram counter part, in fact every Diesel consumer Truck does this. Before you get to that FATAL last mile you will be limited to 5 mph, and the fact it will not start is only if you shut it off 1st.

Anyone that goes to that extreme has no business owning a Diesel Vehicle.
