Definitely corrosion on the aluminum drum/spool or whatever you call it.
Then the vinegar and cloth (sock, scrubbing pad) idea should work.

Had to look up aluminum oxidation; apparently, like silver, there are several types. More proof I'm an EE, not a materials guy.

Curious to see what Warn says. S'pose could range from "benign, ignore it" to "wipe it off" to "OMG, you need to buy a new drum now, here's a link!" Not sure if the drum is covered by their lifetime warranty?

Definitely thick corrosion on the drum. Fairlead seems to have some kind of seal coating and the oxidation is underneath.

Still shocked at the amount. I have an email into Warn.
You live near the sea, no? Your rain probably comes with salts in it picked up from the ocean. Sits against the drum under the line and forms it. 3/4 of the beach Jeeps in NC probably look the same.

Near the sea and actually my only guess. I just am very surprised at the amount of corrosion.

When I had to replace a steel line on my old M6000 many years ago I was shocked at the corrosion. Warn said it was still OK, though I could replace it if I wished, and noted the cable traps moisture against the drum as it seeps along the cable plus can get sucked out of the air and just sits there. I cannot remember back then (~1980's) if the drum was under warranty or not; seems like it was not covered as it was expected to wear out over time.

Edit: Back then, it was phone calls and film pictures mailed to them to review, how times have changed.

When you get it clean, buy and coat that winch with this stuff.

I used have a alum jeep boat, and this stuff was the best protected.

Fairlead coming off and a new Factor55 hard anodized going on.
My included fairlead from Warn was black, and that coating was flaking off after 18months I replaced with a Warn Epic fairlead and it is holding up way better.

Sharkhide is super tough, I am thinking about using it on my King shocks.

I removed the hause fairlead and examined the bolts. The fairlead is aluminum, and my bumper is aluminum, but the bolt is a M12-1.75 carbon steel Grade 5 bolt. This is where the corrosion on the fairlead is coming from.

I am puzzled on the drum though because there is no dissimilar metal in contact. It must just the fact that is never dries and the salty air has caused the damage.

Doing some quick research on the Sharkhide... it seems a better product than the BoeShield. Biggest issue will be getting the drum clean enough that it is effective.

They make a cleaner, I had both on my alumaweld .

I saw that. Gonna attack with vinegar first. I've got that laying around.
Ok, Let know down the road how it turns out. Sharkhide was so tough, it was like hell to get off to clean a area to reapply.

I had the same problem caused by road salt here in New England. Not quite as bad a case but similar. I used some soft wire brushes to clean it up, also soaked the winch line in soapy water and rinsed/dried (there was some powder residue in the line at spots)

Then I used this product heavily on the drum:

Jeep Wrangler JL Corrosion fix - Warn Zeon winch? 1748903488427-xi

I do this every spring and things have been fine for over 2 years now, no new corrosion.

This synthetic line is amazingly resistant to chemicals, see:

https://assets.ctfassets.net/q6qgec...85b10e6d15a/CIS_YA101_Chemical_Resistance.pdf

It laughs at 100% acetone, this anti-corrosion spray is not an issue
