My brother in law recently asked me if I had my undercarriage treated with anti corrosion spray. I have never heard of such a thing but given our winter roads and salt it sounds like a great idea.

Anyone know what he is talking about? Had it done? Suggestions?

Woolwax, Fluid film among others. Readily available on Amazon in various forms.

Works great but messy to apply.

This isnt a service a body shop offers? How does one apply it without getting it all over the exhaust and other components?

It is messy to apply and some will get on the exhaust, but it will quickly burn off.

I had Woolwax applied to the underside of my Willys. Smell was not bad at all and the shop did the application in about 2 hours. Cheap insurance.

This is my 3rd year using fluid film; I use the Black version. Frame looks brand new. If you want to do it yourself it take 3 spray cans to get everything. Look on Amazon for the ones that come with the extension nozzel to get inside the frame.

Is there anything you can get it on that could be problematic? Did you just lay on the ground and spray away?

I use a creeper so I can roll around underneath and put carboard down where I am spraying. It's a messy job but worth it to me. If I could find someone to do it for $200 I would probably let them.

The unprotected frame will last longer than you own the vehicle. With a protectant it'll last even longer.

Yes, just lay on the ground and hose down the frame, axles, shock mounts, LCA, UCA. Try to keep it off the exhaust and brakes. It works very well.

I've recently noticed Autozone sells it for about $11

Yes, TOTALLY worth it. Fluid Film, Krown, Woolwax, NH Oil, and others.

It's basically an oily (not oil, but usually lanolin) coating that is sprayed on, and remains in a "wet" form. Yes it's messy, stinky, and attracts dirt. But it stops any rust from getting worse, and prevents any new rust.

Usually a few hundred dollars to pay a shop. They should be spring into any cavities of frame, hood, doors, everywhere, to do it right.

My 27 year old pickup is rust free and I drive in Michigan winters.

Edit - you will get better results if you have a shop do it (usually, depending on your tools and techniques). They have long wands and stuff to get into the tight areas. I have done it myself with spray cans of Fluid Film off Amazon, but just for touch ups, never for the whole thing.

DO NOT get it on brakes or exhaust.

Edit 2: It is also an excellent long lasting lubricant. For years on my door hinges and latches (on my pickup) I used WD40, white lithium, and none really did the job. Now I use spray fluid film. Totally does the trick.
