Does anyone with a Willys/Rubicon usually take off their sliders when applying, to offer protection to the areas the sliders cover up? Is it worth doing this?

Left the sliders on. The shop I used got in all the nooks and crannies for the frame etc w/o getting it all over the components that don’t require coverage. Much easier job to do when the vehicle is on a lift than on you on your back on a crawler. But it is a do it yourself job if you want.

I'm a fan of FF and have been doing it for 3 years now.

This year I started wondering....with so much being aluminum on here, is it really worth it anymore? Maybe I just don't know any better since mine is rust free.

The frame is steel. So for the winters in New England with all the salt put down, I figured might as well do what I could for preventative purposes.

i used to used Fluid Film (FF) and, although initially strong, i didn’t mind the smell. wife did. smelled a little like crayons maybe?? anyway, i switched to CRC Corrosion Inhibitor - i probably saw a youtube that said it worked a tiny bit better. the main ones all work pretty much as well as each other i think.

the main thing is that you don’t want to use is the black stuff people spray that covers parts in a crusty material. this has been proven to trap moisture and someone who knows more about this will chime in perhaps.

back to FF… i used to spray inside doors but that’s likely not really needed due to doors being aluminum.

yes, definitely a DIY project. i wear safety glasses, a respirator and a hooded sweatshirt. another idea… i take my two ramps to the empty school parking lot and park jeep with one side on curb and other side on ramps - gives me more room to move around.

the one advantage FF has over others is the flexible straw that fits well in the frame. this straw doesn’t fit on CRC cans. last thing - you can buy FF by the gallon and use compressed air to spray but i just buy the cans as clean up, i’d think, would be easier.

i’ve done this 1-2 times per year and have zero rust. pretty cheap insurance.

Is there anything you can get it on that could be problematic? Did you just lay on the ground and spray away?
I spray it on everything underneath my Jeep, except the exhaust. I buy a gallon of Fluid Film and use a $20ish undercoating spray gun and my air compressor.

I made some wooden ramps out of scrap lumber, that are 5 layers of 2x10. I can drive up my ramps, set up my spray gun and spray the underneath in less than 30 minutes.

These aren't mine, but you get the idea. Mine have another layer;

I also use them to work on my motorhome.

Having lived in Maine all my life I have tried everything from old motor oil, bar and chain oil and all the new products out now, NH oil and woolwax have won my vote. i tried fluid film because that’s what the shops who applied it used. Half way through the winter they were getting complaints that it was washing off. Any surface that is susceptible to road spray does easily wash off. The up side to fluid film is that it creeps into cracks and crevices that might not be adequately sprayed, like pinch seems and body cavities. Honestly, I was getting better results from using chainsaw bar and chain oil in my earlier attempts at rust prevention. The local shops started using NH oil, with better results and still some great creep factor they were getting less complaints. Now most use Woolwax or a new product out of Canada that I have yet to see. I sold my 08 Nissan Titan this summer that was religiously undercoated every year by one of the local shops with either NH oil or Woolwax from new. Even though it did have some rust issues around the rear fenders the frame and major components were shiny and clean underneath the 1/4 inch thick layer of protection. I cleaned a small section so the new owner could see for themselves, it looked as if it rolled out of the factory just weeks ago. I replaced the Nissan with a 23 Toyota Tacoma that had not seen salt yet. I decided that I was going to undercoat this truck myself. I pulled the grill, head lights, tail lights, skid plates and any easily accessible heat shielding from the underside along with the spare tire. I broke down and bought a professional spray gun put out by Woolwax but used NH oil. I used just over 3 1/2 gallons of product over the 5 hour process. I will use NH oil again for next years application because of its ability to creep, then after that every year will be touched up with heavier Woolwax. I also sprayed my sisters Tacoma and a new F250 my local volunteer fire department just recently purchased. I am lucky to have a pit in my shop floor and even though it has drawbacks it’s way easier than a rolling creeper. Anyone applying these products should at a minimum be wearing a full face respirator, fine airborne particles of these products can easily get inhaled and cause serious issues. Hours after spraying a vehicle I could still tell that there was oily vapor lingering in the air inside my garage. I also purchased a few disposable tyvek suits, worth every penny.
it all boils down to any protection is better than nothing at all, just be safe spraying it.

👍
I made some similar ramps, I couldn’t find any ramps on the market that looked trustworthy or rugged enough to hold up an ATV.

I have NH Oil applied to mine. Zero rust issues on any of my vehicles. I heard it is a good deterrent for rodents as well.

You can spray fluid film on, and all around the sliders. I don't see the need to remove them.
