I have a 2023 Willy’s 4XE and don’t see any shims in between the hinges and door skins. What I do see is light grey factory primer in the gaps behind the pins.

I have a '24 Rubicon, and don't see evidence of any shims. After another close look, I do see the beginning of a paint bubble on my hood at the hinge. I'll give it time, and see what it does, but expect I will be taking mine in for a paint job before 2029.

Are you saying they primed the steel plate inside the aluminum door panel?

It’s a tiny 1-2mm gap around where the outer door hinges make contact with the doors. The hinges were attached to the doors before painting these things on the assembly line causing missing paint.

Yes I know this. I thought you had taken your hinge off and describing what was between the hinges and door panels instead of just looking at it from the outside. I’m going to take my hinges off and paint the bare metal underneath.

So that first photo shows no sign of primer nor paint?
Yes bare aluminum (the hinge) on bare steel (the 392 hood). Water gets under there easily since the spray paint doesn’t form any type of moisture barrier. That is why you can see so much corrosion. Perfect recipe for a problem in the future.
most jeeps have aluminum hoods so the corrosion would occur between the steel backing plate and the hood itself. In my case the aluminum hinge was corroding.

I performed the same process with my door hinges. On the 2022 the door hinges had a black paint on the inside and the doors bare aluminum. I painted everything and applied a small amount of black RTV ultra around the bolt holes on the door to create a moisture barrier to prevent water from getting inside the door panel. Hopefully this will solve the future corrosion problem.

Aircraft primer would be the dest solution. That stuff sticks to everything and paint bonds to it better. Don’t know why the manufacturer didn’t at least prime all the components before assembly and paint. Steel and aluminum just don’t react well with each other. Learned that in grade school.

I used self etching primer and a color matched topcoat no issues with adhesion and you can’t tell I did anything.

Apparently they do the electrolysis-plating treatment before painting at least.. well on the tailgate anyway

Not on my 2022. It was already starting under the hinge.

That stinks. Has yours been in AZ the entire time? My 2018 bought here doesnt have it yet. I'm sure it will bloom any moment though.

When I took off the tailgate hinges to put on the aftermarket tire carrier, that exposed metal sure seemed uh, suboptimal. Contacted Cavfab n he said tailgate is pretreated at factory. So I swabbed some ACF-50 over it. Once in a while I swab Boeshield down in there best I can with the carrier on 🤷‍♂️

Yes only AZ. The teraflex tire carrier came with 3m so I sanded off the corrosion and stuck that on to serve as a moisture barrier.
