For my iPhone I have this device https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBG4QRPX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 which actually uses WiFi and Bluetooth to establish its connection. The device normally plugs its four wires into either the JL's USB 4 wire factory port in the dash or console, but for me, and because of the way I choose to wire it, my dongle gets its power from a 12V to USB adapter (one of these) https://www.amazon.com/AINOPE-Charger-Adapter-Cigarette-Compatible/dp/B085QFV9T9/ref=sr_1_4?crid=116SLFHQZN4TW&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Xaou1uFoEJ5DyOdKbix5BA9-TBCOhSvMTNpsTEUSgpSDUQJY-j11MF5oGPtLadQirYbIwv6bWVBzOswCHIMekFgR3GBwxKD1SWCfcBZzbtQY24neqIu3Piu2VVDE25qq_9JnONmwcJnYaPGV0FoXDww-4A5BOm-b5oNJCMZQ6l7KlAsWzKKcd4uvCz00gdIOkr4algiw1UnHNJjBBTCEJr8u5sIOGtPVC7SsZlkDeAg.z61W07sys1pGfAVVFKwo5LEv7b4vv5IZWPTXFgzsB8M&dib_tag=se&keywords=12v+cigarette+lighter+to+usb&qid=1710025755&sprefix=12v+cigarette+lighter+to+usb+,aps,100&sr=8-4 in the 12V plug in the dash that provides a power only (not data) USB connection on the dongle's two power wires. That 12V dash plug is only energized when the vehicle is cranked so when the vehicle is parked, the dongle is, by design, powerless to try to establish a connection with my phone. Now I'm confused. Are you saying you have wireless CarPlay (not bluetooth) in your JL?
I did this so that the dongle, still energized after the vehicle is parked on my driveway, were it plugged into one of the factory USB ports for power--for about 70 minutes or so after parking, as per Rhinebeck01's research, doesn't compete for access to my phone with stuff in my home that should take precedence when I'm home.
The dongle's two remaining data wires, which (in addition to the the dongle having electrical power as per the prior paragraph) make wireless Carplay possible, plug into the factory USB port in the console (it could have been the factory Usb port in the dash.)
Picture a female USB-A port that the dongle plugs into much like the ones provided by the factory in the vehicle. This female USB-A cable has 4 wires: 2 for power, 2 for data. In my setup the 2 power wires plug into a 12V to USB adapter in the 12V dash socket, and the 2 data wires plug into the factory USB port in the console (or dash.)
If I chucked this dongle out of the window I still have a cable connected to the USB port in the dash, that can provide a CarPlay connection (data) as well phone charging (power) provided I plug the loose end of this cable into my phone.
Finally, also plugged into the 12V outlet's (other/second) USB adapter is an Apple Magsafe Charger https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L5NP6NG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that if I put the phone up against it, but with no physical connection to the phone, will charge it, albeit slowly than a physically connected wire, while the aforementioned dongle provides the wireless Carplay functionality.
....lots of options, like Rhinebeck01 said, (even though he enjoys the Android side of things) depending on the duration of the trip and convenience of not having to take out my phone if I don't need to charge it, but still enjoying Carplay access to the phone's content via the dongle, or having to take the phone out and put it up against the Magsafe charger if I don't need a speedy charge, but not having to plug it in (and still enjoying CarPlay via the dongle), or finally plugging the phone in for fast charging and dongle-less connection to Carplay.
For iphones, a USB cord plugged into the phone will take precedence in providing charging power over putting the phone up against a Magsafe charger and access Carplay via that cable over the dongle. I am not sure that this can be programmed differently in the phone's settings.
