Now I'm confused. Are you saying you have wireless CarPlay (not bluetooth) in your JL?
For my iPhone I have this device https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBG4QRPX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 which actually uses WiFi and Bluetooth to establish its connection. The device normally plugs its four wires into either the JL's USB 4 wire factory port in the dash or console, but for me, and because of the way I choose to wire it, my dongle gets its power from a 12V to USB adapter (one of these) https://www.amazon.com/AINOPE-Charger-Adapter-Cigarette-Compatible/dp/B085QFV9T9/ref=sr_1_4?crid=116SLFHQZN4TW&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Xaou1uFoEJ5DyOdKbix5BA9-TBCOhSvMTNpsTEUSgpSDUQJY-j11MF5oGPtLadQirYbIwv6bWVBzOswCHIMekFgR3GBwxKD1SWCfcBZzbtQY24neqIu3Piu2VVDE25qq_9JnONmwcJnYaPGV0FoXDww-4A5BOm-b5oNJCMZQ6l7KlAsWzKKcd4uvCz00gdIOkr4algiw1UnHNJjBBTCEJr8u5sIOGtPVC7SsZlkDeAg.z61W07sys1pGfAVVFKwo5LEv7b4vv5IZWPTXFgzsB8M&dib_tag=se&keywords=12v+cigarette+lighter+to+usb&qid=1710025755&sprefix=12v+cigarette+lighter+to+usb+,aps,100&sr=8-4 in the 12V plug in the dash that provides a power only (not data) USB connection on the dongle's two power wires. That 12V dash plug is only energized when the vehicle is cranked so when the vehicle is parked, the dongle is, by design, powerless to try to establish a connection with my phone.

I did this so that the dongle, still energized after the vehicle is parked on my driveway, were it plugged into one of the factory USB ports for power--for about 70 minutes or so after parking, as per Rhinebeck01's research, doesn't compete for access to my phone with stuff in my home that should take precedence when I'm home.

The dongle's two remaining data wires, which (in addition to the the dongle having electrical power as per the prior paragraph) make wireless Carplay possible, plug into the factory USB port in the console (it could have been the factory Usb port in the dash.)

Picture a female USB-A port that the dongle plugs into much like the ones provided by the factory in the vehicle. This female USB-A cable has 4 wires: 2 for power, 2 for data. In my setup the 2 power wires plug into a 12V to USB adapter in the 12V dash socket, and the 2 data wires plug into the factory USB port in the console (or dash.)

If I chucked this dongle out of the window I still have a cable connected to the USB port in the dash, that can provide a CarPlay connection (data) as well phone charging (power) provided I plug the loose end of this cable into my phone.

Finally, also plugged into the 12V outlet's (other/second) USB adapter is an Apple Magsafe Charger https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L5NP6NG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that if I put the phone up against it, but with no physical connection to the phone, will charge it, albeit slowly than a physically connected wire, while the aforementioned dongle provides the wireless Carplay functionality.

....lots of options, like Rhinebeck01 said, (even though he enjoys the Android side of things) depending on the duration of the trip and convenience of not having to take out my phone if I don't need to charge it, but still enjoying Carplay access to the phone's content via the dongle, or having to take the phone out and put it up against the Magsafe charger if I don't need a speedy charge, but not having to plug it in (and still enjoying CarPlay via the dongle), or finally plugging the phone in for fast charging and dongle-less connection to Carplay.

For iphones, a USB cord plugged into the phone will take precedence in providing charging power over putting the phone up against a Magsafe charger and access Carplay via that cable over the dongle. I am not sure that this can be programmed differently in the phone's settings.

Ahh so you are using a dongle

I thought you were saying you had wireless CarPlay natively. I see it's available in Uconnect 5 but I believe My 2018 was Uconnect 3 and my 2021 is Uconnect 4C. Hence the confusion

Hm, not sure. I pair my phone to the Jeep with Bluetooth, but I guess that's not CarPlay. I do have CarPlay in my Mini, and I'd say it's marginally nicer than what I have in the Jeep. But I only do two things with my phone while in the car: Listen to something or pull up a map.
You should try CarPlay or Android Auto in your Jeep. It's quite a bit better than using your phone directly, primarily due to having significantly more screen real estate. That's assuming, of course, that your Jeep's screen is at least 7".

And yes, most of us use it primarily for listening to stuff and maps. Hold the button on the steering wheel and tell it where you want to go.

I’d probably welcome wireless but it’s since it’s not available natively on my 23, I haven’t given it much thought.

Wired is unreliable for me. Despite trying multiple USB-C cables (Apple, Anker, etc), none consistently connect to CarPlay on the first try.

I’m looking for a cable that will end the need to constantly plug and unplug.

Which plug? The one between the seats is notoriously problematic with iPhones.

@Rhinebeck01 ,
Confusing title, for the pole. I use Android Auto all the time. Serious XM is a joke and a ripoff.
Maybe change it to:
Are you using Wireless Android Auto, and or Wireless CarPlay ?

For those that have ongoing issues with USB cables failing, etc., and find their "Wired is unreliable",
do know that other's with the same issues have posted they went with a Wireless dongle and were left smiling lets say..

Consider buying a wireless dongle at Amazon. Try it out.... You can always return for full refund if that dongle does not perform as you wish.

IF you are an Android guy, I recommend you do go with the AAWireless dongle and not the Motorola MA1 dongle!

The AAWIreless adapter is now supporting wireless CarPlay as well, although it's in Beta mode and i don't use iPhones so I can't vouch for how well it's working. For AA, mine is flawless in both of our Jeeps (plugged into the center console USB port) and by using the associated app and turning on "Start/Stop mode", that forces the adapter to not connect to the phone until it sees the Bluetooth connection from the Jeep, which solves the issue of connecting to my phone from the garage for an hour or so after shutting the Jeep off. I also have a magsafe charger on an Offroam mount, so I just stick the phone to it when I get in the Jeep and go. No futzing with wires and my phone stays charged all the time.

With my 2018 JL, wired has always worked very well and to this day wired connect still does.. (I have always used Android smartphones)

In Feb 2022, I purchased a wireless dongle and from then on, I have run wireless the majority of the time. I drive lots... my JL is not a garage Queen.

Anyway, what a pleasure it is to not have to deal with a cable attached smartphone. Also, no unsightly cable in eyesight, no cable issues, etc.. For sure I am pro-wireless Android Auto or wireless Apple Car Play.

I encourage guys/gals to at least try wireless... I believe if they do try they will for ever more want to go wireless..

I do go Wireless in my Ram 3500 but when I'm driving my Jl or Jt I'm usually multi tasking on the phone 70% of the time if I didn't plug in my phone would be dead atleast twice a day ???

I use AA adapter and the wireless charging phone mount from Bulletpoint with a Magsafe phone case. Holds on well. Only issue is the constant "trying to connect" after I get home and car is in the garage. There is a thread on Gladiator forum for a work around messing with fuse box but I haven't tried that.
