1. too easy to miss a shift with an extra line of gears
2. jeep doesnt even need 6.. just the same 1-4 with a 5th overdrive with a ratio somewhere in between the current 5 and 6 would be good.
That would have been ideal IMO too. Having owned the JK as well as JL manuals, I like the ratio of JK better for city driving.

Maybe that means that the JL just needs larger tires? :)

Hahaha....youre right torero. But you see, its only really a 4 speed x 2....but it is set up like a 5 speed with that granny low gear.
The damned 7 speeds theyre selling now have another line of gears making it 4 across. easier to miss one.
And that extra gear doesnt let you go faster...it justvgets you an extra mpg on flat ground with a tailwind

Hey, here's a thought: Lets just revert to the old "three on the tree" or the two-speed automatic, points and condenser ignition, total loss oil systems, leaded gasoline, magnetos, hand crank starters, no mufflers, drum brakes and lots of asbestos . . .

Buscuit, i dont want to go back to those days. while i loved my old 3 on a tree trannies, the addition of the granny low and an overdrive adds so much to driveability.
But the current 6 speed is just that....a basic 3 speed with a granny low and TWO overdrives.
You dont really need 2 overdrives except for the epa ratings. Lots of guys here say they never get into 6th. I love the mt in the wrangler. But it really only needs 1 od.

If you don't like 6th gear, then don't use it... Pretty simple...

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't hurt anything... But then again, I'm an engineer and can count to 6 and not lose my place... :)

Well, thats an option. I DO use 6 and i like it....a lot. But i live on flat ground.
I was just saying that we have 6 and 7 speeds to satisfy the EPA corporprate requirements and that jeep couldve simply used a 5 speed with 1 overdrive somewhere between the 2 we get in the 6 speed and the truck would still be great
but emmissions standards necessitated going the extra mile to squeeze better mileage under ideal testing conditions..
Semis need all the gears for driveability due to the incredibly short powerband of a big diesel.
Gas motors dont have that issue because there is a useable 5000rpm powerband.
thus, no REAL need for the second overdrive....and certainly no need for another gear.
Thats all i was saying. I love the 6speed and i do use all the gears

I have the manual and use 6th gear all the time with driving the 45 miles to work getting around 22 MPG. 6th gear keeps the RPM's below 2K when driving 70 MPH and I don't have any issues with having to down shift. My TJ with a 4 cyl. and manual 5 speed was a different story if you had a head wind you would not be able to stay in 5th and would have to down shift. It had 4:10 gears also where the JL has 3:45's. If you want more power in sixth then regear.

6th gear is useless to me, but sounds like it works for others. No crazy hills here, but it's definitely not flat, so I can't use it on the highway...I can use 5th a little bit, but need to downshift to 4th a decent amount to maintain speed on the highways. Then again, I'm no where near 22 mpg, let alone 20...

so is the sixth gear more usable in the Rubicon with the 410's ? me personally I like to be able to keep my Rpm's down as much as possible without lugging but like others have stated I am sure in time we will have the answers
we need to Re gear the six for optimal pulling power

Yes, you are absolutely right. I can’t believe for a second that anyone is getting 22mpg in a wrangler, unless they are driving 45mph, down hill in neutral. But at some point, you have to go back uphill.
