Hello. Need some advice. I have a ‘23 Willys 4XE. About 6300 miles. Gonna rotate the tires but not sure what I want to do. I have the factory MT’s and plan on upgrading to 35’s when these tires have run their course. So should I rotate all 5 tires? Or just the 4 and keep the spare brand new to trade in when the time comes? Don’t even know if trading or selling a single tire is a worthwhile thing?

Rotating all 5 will give you longer tire wear. That’s what I did on my first set of 35’s. Doing it on my second set as well.

100% do the 5 tire rotation. To your point, you would have to sell the spare at a significant discount due to it being a single tire and having been sitting on the back of your jeep for years exposed to the elements. You'll have to practically give it away. Perhaps if you were going to replace the stock tires with another set of 32 inch tires, you could justify not using the 5th tire as it would still function as a spare for your new set.

(1) it's ugly when the spare doesn't match the tires you have on the jeep
(2) you cannot use a 32 inch spare with 35 inch tires.
(3) you will get pennies on the dollar for the spare when it's time to upgrade.

To add one more bullet point to @Cunky's: you'll get ~20% more life out of your tires by rotating all 5. That might be good or bad depending on how quickly you're wanting to justify going to 35s. But, of course, you'll be thinking about 37s if you wait long enough!

Another perspective - when I cut a sidewall I wanted a replacement that had similar mileage on it (so I could continue to do 5 tire rotations). I wouldn't base your decision on ~$100 difference when you get rid of them.

You need to get on it though, 6300 miles is a bit long in the tooth for a mud terrain.

I recommend utilizing the spare in the rotation process. It adds mile life to the set as a whole. Those full size spare tires can get expensive! Get your $$ worth out of them. @Cunky is spot on with his assessment!

If you're waiting for these tires to wear out to go to 35s, I vote 4 only because they will wear out 20% quicker. I've always done 5 for rotations but I tend to replace them long before they are worn out and sell the used set of 5 with equal mileage.

Excellent point. With a four tire rotation at some point the spare will be significantly larger than the other four. I'm trying to wrap my head around the implications of driving with one tire significantly larger than the other three after a flat, especially if you need to use lockers.

That's another topic of debate. Not quite as bad as which oil to use though. ; )

I didn't rotate my spare in until almost 20k. Oddly enough one of the original 4 was worn more than the others, so now that is the spare. The rears seem to wear faster but it depends on how you drive. I typically go front to back but the k02 needs side to side (x pattern) for evenness. I'm at 41k and I'd guess there's another 15-20k left on them. Also lower your tire pressure to 32ish or you're leaving a lot of meat on the outside tread.

Always do the 5 tire, you want to keep it in the rotation. Leaving it on the back just for looks only hurts the wallet more in the end.
