If the intent is to ask which is "better" for wheeling, I'd recommend 35s with skids. If the question is about which you should spend money on, it depends on how much you want to spend, which products you're considering, are you already lifted enough for 37s? Is it a question of paying for a lift vs skids? What's your current platform?

I bought the JLUR-XR on 35s. First thing I spent good money on was skids, I'm fully Undercloaked now. Ran that for a year. I am now lifted and running 37s (for cheap due to the XR package). The skids gave me peace of mind, but no real extra capability. The 37s gave me extra capability. But I did a lot on 35s. The stuff I do on 37s I would not want to do without skids. That's why I prioritized those. I recommend going skids first.

Well... I mean you are right tho, if you don't do 37s you're a chump. I assumed that was obvious...

I must be wheeling wrong. I have 37s, and a 3.5" lift and my skid plates are pretty beat up.

Either way, put an oil skid on. Cheap insurance and there is no coverage on the oil pan at all. I went oil pan and TC skids on mine, stock gas tank skid is holding up so far. On my wife's, I just did an Artec oil pan skid because she won't be beating on hers as much as I do mine.

I was curious about this.
I don't want to do full skids (price and weight), but just the skids that I think I need most.

I seem to hit cross members the most, I don't often rock crawl where I could fall on boulders, but more trails where I bottom out on large flat rock/dirt.

my experience is 35's will get you a dusy ershim and Rubicon trail badge with no issues and you can do most of the tougher Moab trails.

or better yet.. just decide if you need skids and only after that consider tires. If you think you need them, get them and then get the tires you can/want. If you don’t think you need skids.. just get the 37s.

Edit Note: I will say as an after thought.. for a DD 37s doesn’t make sense to me at all, personally. Unless I had a second set of tires that I swap out before offroad trips. Too expensive to bleed out on a DD.

We started with an 2022 JLUR xr this go round, and full belly skids were ordered day 1. Cheap insurance vs what the oil pan alone cost me on our 2019 wheeling too aggressively stock. Conversely my 2023 mojave got 2" of lift and 37s with factory skids, but going fast in the desert isn't rock crawling.

My plan is 35 with skids, start with easy and mild trails to test out and practice. You can upgrade with 37 later if the needs still present.

37 without skids may work fine, also cause damage to unprotected components. Then you’ll have more to fix.

37s are perfectly fine for DD. With a proper lift kit, they can ride better than stock. Mine goes everywhere.

I’d be more worried about gearing and driveability than skid plates or not. If you have an Xtreme recon fine, but if not, you’re already undergeared with 35s, imagine with 37s.

Another one of these threads where OP ask a question gives very little information and disappears…….. “ daily driver that goes on a few trips a year “…….. trips to where , Starbucks, Mall, Moab, ???? :facepalm: ….
