Yep, they changed the formula. But I wouldn't worry about it. I don't believe they've compromised the overall performance of the oil in this application. I haven't done one in awhile, but I will do a UOA at some point on the new formulation. And 30% is still more than anyone else outside of boutique oils, such as Amsoil or Red Line. (I love Red Line, btw. I just can't bring myself to spend the money.)

I did see Lake Speed Jr. (The Motor Oil Geek on YouTube) do a video on oxidation stability and found Mobil 1 Truck and SUV to handle high stress better than "regular" Mobil 1, so I may give that one a go in 0w20 flavor.

You could also look at the ESP line of oils. The X2 0w20 meets Porsche C20 which is a REALLY hard standard to meet. It runs an engine through a crazy performance regime with high stress high rpm conditions. I'd even consider ESP 0w30. My understanding is that the ESP oils still have a substantial amount of PAO.
Walmart sells it in a nice Mobil 1 box 😋 They don't sell PUP like that.

I use 5W-30 as the engines originally spec. The 0W-20 is for CAFE fuel mileage not engine protection. But it's your engine do what you want.

I read somewhere that 5w30 couldn't cool the upper part of the engine and messed up the Pentastrs, FCA immediately switched to 5w20, just after a year

Hmm. Now you tell us. My old Jk just crossed 230k miles on 20 weight oil. I wish you'd told me this when it was new. I might not have risked it. ;)

This one is such an interesting oil, has all the certifications, API, Ilsac, resource conserving and all. It has Ford and GM too. Just doesn't have our MS-6395.

I am so tempted to try it this summer

Why not use the 0w30 ESP?

I was hoping ESP 0w20 to be like 9.2 thick, but no, the stupid thing is only 7.9 ☹

Put some Valvoline R&P in it and go back to worrying about breaking an axle when you wheel.

Is 5w20 more robust than 0w20?
It ran both, but it depends. The first 140-150k were mostly on 5w20 but later I moved to the same M1 EP 0w20 as I was running in my JL. I'd take Mobil 1 0w20 over anyone else's 5w20. It has about 30% PAO in it. Some would argue that there are more viscosity improvers in the 0w20 than the 5w20, but the spread is still more narrow than a 5w30, so I don't think it is a stretch.

The Mobil 1 EP 0w20 still handles higher temps and flows at lower temps than their EP 5w20 or 5w30. That's the PAO in there.

But at the end of the day, at full operating temp, they are in the same 20 weight range.

That old JK towed boats and campers and did LOTS of crawling in hot weather on 5w20 and 0w20. Never a hiccup. I sold it at 193k or so and the guy that bought it has over 230k on it now. He said he's been running Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 0w20 and she still runs like new.

When you look at the design, it's not so different than other DOHC engines with VVT and VVL, until you get to the hydraulic "lifter" (fulcrum in this design). They have also revised these "lifters" at least once in the PUG run. That is an indication they are aware of an issue in this area. My guess is the lifter pistons get sticky and beat the rocker/cam to death. If this is the issue, keeping oil change intervals shorter, and using a high detergent oil might avoid a problem and be more effective than all the other majic oil stuff and viscosity concerns.

0W-20 PUP. 5 months and 3,000 miles. I think I'll stay with what I'm using. Seems like it does pretty good.
I think you're right. An interval that short and PUP could help prevent it. But a UOA probably won't provide indications until damage has already started.
