BS lab is just that, BS. I'm pretty sure you've been told that several times Carbonsteel

I think you're right. An interval that short and PUP could help prevent it. But a UOA probably won't provide indications until damage has already started.

Isn't that the whole point of a UOA? You save all of them, and when you see a number changing that shouldn't you try to address the issue before it becomes major.

Their pup 5W30 VOA says 9.13, and then when I sent them a red line and asked them to confirm whether it was 9.0 or not, their report said 9.01. I feel like they didn't even bother to test its viscosity, they just confirmed it to me that is yes it's 9. I think one should give them the least amount of information, just send them the sample and say it is synthetic 0w20. Crooks 😡

Guys, my first couple of oil filters had little shiny silver stuff in them, is that normal?

The Metal Cloak dealer and installer who did my lift kit, and Jeeps is all he does, told me to run Mobil 1 EP 5w30, and don't worry about your warranty because you will not need it 😆

No. It wont keep it from being "major" in terms of parts and labor, if you consider any internal work major. But, it may give you time to dump it, assuming your OCI is shorter than the failure mode. Thats a big assumption.

In order for any analysis/test data/etc to be a reliable method of preventing an occurrence of an specific event, there has to be:
  1. reliably identifiable indicators of progression toward the event.
  2. a reliable inspection/test method of detecting the indicators (standards, parameters, limits, etc)
  3. knowledge of the time from when the indicator is first detectable until the event occurs
  4. inspection/test intervals adjusted to the time span from first detectable-event. This typically is at least 2 opportunities to detect the indicator before the event
The above is an engineering driven inspection/test methodology that is applied to many engineered products where the event is unacceptable

When you look at the design, it's not so different than other DOHC engines with VVT and VVL, until you get to the hydraulic "lifter" (fulcrum in this design). They have also revised these "lifters" at least once in the PUG run. That is an indication they are aware of an issue in this area. My guess is the lifter pistons get sticky and beat the rocker/cam to death. If this is the issue, keeping oil change intervals shorter, and using a high detergent oil might avoid a problem and be more effective than all the other majic oil stuff and viscosity concerns.
And run a very high quality oil. I do 5k OCI´s. But do remember that the famous 625k mile Pentastar did typically 7k mile oil changes. He ran mostly Mobil 1 synthetic and occasionally Valvoline synthetic.

But I think a shorter OCI can´t hurt.

Stupid BS Lab shook my confidence in PUP 0w20. Afrer 2000 miles its viscosity was 7.5, and that is a lie. Bdcause virgin it is 8.8
