No foul... I figured as much.
I have had multiple JK's since 2007 and know what you are facing so to speak.

DO know there is lots different with the JL.

Do your homework as the JL is a different animal so to speak.

Yes it’s true you can get a lot of valuable information from these forms but like your dealer experience there’s a lot of miss information that goes around on the Internet and these forms as well. Your owners manual is still your best and most reliable source of information . there was no misprint in the owners manual the misprint is in the dealers head. The owners manual has been always correct the dealers never had any written documentation that shows 6 they were just always using the JK specifications there’s really no confusion.
I have been reading these forums for many many years and have witnessed many back-and-forth arguments in the forums which ended Immediately by a quick screenshot from the owners manual with real facts.
I get it... the owner's manual is called that for a reason. I keep that 600+ page behemoth under the seat. I don't completely poo-poo it, but when I have specific questions, this is the place for me. I've never been steered wrong or let down. My dealer hasn't been able to give me answers, and when I ask the same questions here, I get answers. The oil debate wasn't the deal-breaker for me... it was just 1 of many things that caused me to lose faith.

I don't take every word in the forums as a definitive answer. There are a handful of owners here who know a f*ck-ton more than the staff at my dealer does. I agree that this forum does contain some misinformation, but it's quickly corrected by the experts here. I know more now that I did when I first got this JL.

I can confirm that the Jeep Wrangler JLU Sport S takes 5 quarts. I went for my first oil change (thanks Jeep Wave!) Yesterday.
The dealer put 6, I got back to work, and on a hunch decided to check my oil. Sure enough, it was over. I called the dealership back and they told me 6 was correct. I called them on it, cited the owners manual, a second dealership, and a private oil change shop. I asked the dealership to fix it. The moment I walked through the door, the service tech (super cool guy) immediately told me that I was correct, and fixed the error. He then proceeded to show me himself (not one of his minions) that the oil level was correct after draining the excess.
Bottom line:
6 quarts too much, 5 quarts just right.
It pays to do your research, remain calm, and stand firm.

I just checked mine after seeing this and sure enough it says they put 6qt of 5-20 in it and mine does look overfilled. I hope there's no long term problems from running around overfilled for about 1000 miles!

Hi, I know you have posted this in 2018 but I wonder how did the overfill situation got resolved. Did you develop any engine mechanical problems later on because of the extra oil?

2018 JLU
I have a 2018 JLU, took delivery new years eve 2018. Did first oil change myself at 3,500. I used what the owners manual required...5 quarts of 0-20 synthetic. I had a 2009 JK and was happy I didn't have to buy that sixth quart of oil any more! I took the JLU to the dealer in Aug 2019 for first "free" oil change and tire rotation. I didn't look at the receipt as I was late for a meeting. I get home and finally look at the receipt and it says 6 quarts of 5-20. I checked and it was definitely overfilled. I took it back to the dealer first thing the next morning and showed them the manual and receipt and told them it was overfilled. Interesting note that on the drive back (about 8-9 miles) the oil pressure was about double (low 60's) when accelerating. Anyway, the service manager doubted my claim that it was over filled. He checked it twice then admitted it was over filled. He fought me on whether they put 0-20 or 5-20 but then caved and offered a drain and refill of 0-20. I also asked that they put in a new filter and he agreed.

"Free" oil change number 2: November 2019. Took it in on a Saturday afternoon. I explained the previous visit and told them the JL takes 5 quarts 0-20 full synthetic. The same guy who doubted me the last time I was there was on duty. I'm pretty sure he remembered me. After the oil change, he escorted me to my JL and the service tech was there. Engine off, hood up and dipstick out to show me that the oil was at the proper level. The receipt again said 6 quarts and the mechanic says the manual is wrong...that it takes 6 not 5 quarts. I was starting to think the tech was blowing smoke up my arse. I'm thinking that he really put 5 quarts in and told me 6. I checked it at home after letting it sit 10 minutes and it was at the proper level.

I've decided to forgo my remaining two "free" oil changes. It just isn't worth the hassle at the dealer. I don't want to be lied to. I've changed the oil myself three other times on the JL and used 5 quarts. Each time it's right at the top of the notch. I did all my own repairs and maintenance on my old JK (oil changes, 5 tire rotation, brakes and rotors, brake bleed, spark plugs, ball joints, tie rods with backyard alignment). I don't pretend to know everything but I'm not someone who just gets in and drives then takes it to the dealer when the dash lights go on.
