I was coming back from a trip last week and began to overheat going up the last mountain pass. Altmont Pass in the Bay Area for anyone familiar. It was 100* in the valley when I came through and before I was 1/2 up, I was hitting 240...245....and then eventually the magic number, 250. Only choice was to slow way down and putt up the mountain with the big rigs. Turned A/C off, no help. Temps return to normal just about immediately after slowing down. I'm typically at 75mph on the freeway.

JLUR 2.0T, 37s, Steel bumpers and a KC Pro6 lightbar. No other real weight on the Jeep yet which has me worried since next up on my list are a rack and RTT.

Took it out a bit ago in 84* weather and started up a lesser hill to test (Sunol Pass from the SJ side) but hit traffic. Was still able to hit 230 though before even getting to the hill.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. I know it should run a little hot being a turbo but 250+ on a relatively benign pass shouldn't be normal I don't think... All ears though.

Are you using 87 or 91 octane? I just filled up with 87 octane on my 2.0 and it seems to be running hotter, but we don’t have mountain passes...just 100 degree heat. That’s a bit anecdotal...just a thought.

Good data point either way. I'm running 91 since day 1

Normally run around 195-200 at sea level on the highway in the East Coast in low to mid 90s. I've gone up through mountain passes in California, around 70-80 degrees in the Fall, and hit around 215-220 and was only going around 35mph or so. Once I slowed down or was not ascending it would drop down to around 200.

Ran mostly 87 or 91 octane during that time. Doing 93 these days.

My fan usually kicks in at about 224 and only does that when crawling in 4L with no airflow thru the radiator. Otherwise its around 195-200 interstate driving at 65-70. Seems your temps would make sense to be higher when your're over 80mph in 7th gear and running at 2600 rpm, when I'm at 65 in 8th running 1800 rpm. Your lower 4.10 axles contribute to a higher RPM than my Sport 3:45 gearing. If you didn't recal the speedo and it won't shift into 8th that could possibly be a contributing factor.

My fan kicks in when I pull out of my driveway. It's annoying and currently my biggest issue.

No elevation. In 70 degrees, it runs 205-210 in city driving. In 90 degrees, it runs 195-200 on the same roads.

35s, 2.5 inch lift

I noticed the same thing. Recently got hot here in NJ (in the upper 80's-90*F) and it seems that as soon as ambient air temps are above 80*F, it will allow the fans to kick in while driving over 15mph to keep things crazy cool. Engine temps were only getting around 190*ish around town. Haven't had it out on the highway in hot weather yet and I honestly don't remember from last summer what it did on the highway.

Went wheeling in the Colorado mountains today between 8,500 and 10750 ft. Going up hill in low range, occasional crawling, ran between 205 and 210. Downhill...about 199. - 195. I really like this motor.

I have noticed my fan kicks on pretty immediately when pulling out of the driveway. Now I have only owned since the end of June and We have had consistently 90 to 100 with ridiculous humidity the entire time... And I have a bit of a rough idle at startup as well.

I feel the engine sounds a bit like a hamster wheel, definitely not the greatest sound. However I do dig the performance of it, quite a peppy thing. Fyi I have been running 93oct since the first fill up, not sure what the dealer put in(i suspect 87). About 1200 miles now. Average 16.5/17ish mpg on the stock 33's.

My 2 cents - oil temperature is +116C with outside temperature about +42C and going up to the mountains on highway(~83 mph) with 91oct fuel.

Oh, totally forgot to update this thread...

Turns out there was a little (read...LOT) of mud caked in my radiator....that I had....missed during cleaning

Happier now
