103 degrees out -- top back on?

Do you put your top back on and run the A/C when it gets really hot?

It was 107 today - as soon as the spring rain stops, off comes the top. Granted, I had to have a malignant skin cancer removed from my arm this week. I’ve always been a “top down” kind of guy.- I guess that’s the price. Wouldn’t change it

I'm going to guess (not from appearance but your lack of reported SLNB) that this was a basal or squamous cell carcinoma, not the melanoma @DocTwinkie reports: the skin cancer most associated with mortality if it spreads to your lymph nodes.

That's NOT the price worth paying.

SLNB: (sentinel lymph node biopsy) radioactive dye is injected into the cancer site that travels to a nearby lymph node, detected by the surgeon a while later with a Geiger counter and removed for cancer testing. A positive result in the lymph node: bad, bad news--but your choice..just sayin'.

It was the least aggressive. I’m already older than dirt - had a life that has been unreal - at this point every day is a gift.

1. I’m a doctor who works at a cancer center so I see a lot of sad melanoma cases.
2. I’m pale. Like really really pale.
3. I work nights so I rarely see the sun and when I do it lets me know I have zero defense against it. I fry in minutes.
4. Lots of skin cancer in my family.

When I do have to go into the sun it’s usually long shirt and pants that are both UPF 50 rated. I have a giant LL Bean hat.

I loathe sunscreen as the only thing that works for me is zinc. Lots and lots of zinc. Which means everything I touch has white smears on it and my beard looks like I dipped my face in flour. Lol.

I like driving windows down and sunroof open. But I have a long sleeve UPF 50 to protect the arms and only open the sunroof if the sun isn’t on me or I have a hat.

Since I’m considering a hardtop then a UPF sunshade would be amazing. Would live to see someone make layers of mesh to let the air pass through but keep the sun 100% out. I think best option is dual top and safari the soft top.

I mostly just wish they earned people that these tops afford little to no protection from UV.
Thanks I spit my coffee out from laughing, I’m halibut white also and have a skin cancer background. I bought some sunscreen with zinc and my doors, center console and seats have the smears.

UPF clothing has really made a huge difference and isn’t as horrible looking as it used to be. It’s also contrary to what you’d think cooler than shorts and a t shirt.

Tilley makes clothes. They’re pricey but will last decades. Arctic cool makes some basic shirts. Gh Bass has nice looking button ups.

REI has great sales on theirs and just about any outdoor brand or store has UPF rated clothing. Their pants are super thin and comfy. It is usually synthetic so wicks and drys super fast. No need to reapply or smear white crap on everything. You should still apply to your face, back of hands. Back of hands evening forgets and it becomes a cancer target. Back of feet if your doing sandals. I’m a Chaco guy.

I usually just do some in my nose and cheeks with a hat (4” brim). Tilleys are quality but their brims are usually pretty small. LL Bean has a larger one that on a side note ha been crapped on by birds twice.

Saw the weather report yesterday morning and we are back to 100+ temps up here in the greater Sacramento area. I was heading to a lake to do some bass fishing and took the time to put the top back on before I left. Just couldn't stand the thought of sitting at the stop lights on the way out of town with it so hot out.
that really depends what kind of cowboy you are

Living out here, my awesome FZ-09 sits in the garage most of the summer. I used to commute by bike, but there are too many cellphone-drivers now. I swear I can't tell you how many times I've had to avoid distracted drivers. That and no matter how much mesh you have on, in 100+ temps in commute traffic, you are going to be hot as F. Not only do you get cooked by the sun, but you also get cooked by the radiator fans blowing hot air around you. And you show up to work all stinky. During the commute is not the time to be wearing half-assed gear.

I agree. We have had some high 90s stretches here with high humidity. Screw that dry heat out west. Turn on the oven and stick your head in and that’s dry heat too. Still too hot. When I first started riding years ago, nobody had cell phones other than Crockett and Tubbs on Miami Vice. Now, every other driver I pass has their face buried in it. Maybe I’m getting soft in my middle age, but it’s just gotten too risky to commute on the bike. And it’s not like it’s a scenic ride into our nation’s capitol, it’s basically it’s just crappy, congested freeway, even at 5AM. Way more comfy and secure in the Jeep!

Last summer, I ran topless for a few weeks in May/June; however, after that point, it was just too hot at a standstill and I didn't feel like running the A/C as it felt like a waste. This summer, I've been running topless with a sunshade and when it gets into the 90s, I flip the A/C on and it makes it bearable.

Haven’t read through the thread so apologies if I’m stating the obvious, but two quick points:

I actually have a shade. I cheap'd out, though, and bought a Rugged Ridge $60 top. Maybe I should look into Alien??
Get a J-Top. They are a little pricey, but the straps are well worth it.

Those are pretty bad ass, going to get the wife one. She always has one hand on her "jeep hair don't care" hat.

In the worst part of Texas Summers I go off and on with it for a couple months, often avoiding using the naked version at the heat of the day if I can avoid it. With my JKUR is have a Besttop so I really rarely pull the top off anyway, just the back windows and the doors....its way better to have shade VS a mesh top in that weather.

I’d recommend picking up a few, but maybe that’s just because I’m so disorganized I can’t reliably grab the same hat every time.

I’ve been very pleased with mine.

In GA it has been “feels like over 100” almost every day since I bought my Rubicon in early June. And the humidity makes it feel like you are swimming rather than walking. I’m basically the opposite of everyone else, as my soft top will go on at the first hint of fall and I will put my hardtop back on for summer.

Depends...by myself it is top down hot or cold and everything in between, drove in the rain twice with top down too.

Wife and kids in the car, top up AC on, rather not hear the complaining if it's over 90 and humid.

If I lived where it rarely rained, I would probably sell the doors and top and buy a tarp lol

I run a soft top in the summer here in Texas and when it's >95 degrees, that top typically goes back up and the AC comes on. Same for no doors and top down, I like under 95 degrees and no rain in the forecast but I've only lived here for 6 years so I'm still adjusting to the furnace that is Texas summer. I do have a sun shade which helps but...103 degrees while sitting at a stop light is miserable.
Hello, I just got my JLU Sahara with Sky Power Top here in Big D. I found out real quick that going topless when temp at say 88 is borderline. Above 90 and its Texas Furnace like you said. I cannot wait till our Texas winter. I love the cold so I can put coat on and really go Topless a LOT !!! I saw Topless Jeep at red light and temp was 98 and heat index 108 and the driver was wiping wet towel across his face. I was blowing my AC with closed Jeep !!! lol Right now I do most of my Driving topless 6AM going to work. Just too dang hot in Texas.
