What!?!?! Yeah, that's messed up. Maybe check an auto parts store to see if they have longer tethers. Weird.

I didn’t read all 5 pages, but probably my first mod was removing the tether. No regrets about it.

It's not so much about having to find a way to fix it, that's easy, I'm just point out a little annoyance for this fantastic vehicle :giggle:

Because of this movie, whenever I see no regrets, I think of this.....

Of course. It's an easy enough "problem" to fix, but seems like an odd thing to be an issue. That tiny tether would be annoying though. Seems like it would put the cap in the way every time you filled up.

Yup, that's exactly what happens.

But considering how often we visit our friends at the gas station, it gives me practice to hone my skill in maneuvering the cap so I don't look like I have no coordination filling up a gas tank. There are subtle differences at each station's pumps, so I may find one that doesn't allow me to fill up unless I rip off the tether. 1st world problem....actually it might be a 3rd world problem for those driving JLs in those areas.

That wouldn't work for me. The tether is shorter than that. Doesn't reach very far at all. They must have run out of tether plastic. I just need another inch....that's what she said.
It’s not the length of your tether that matters, it’s how you use it. :cwl:

Of course. Considering I can still fill the thing up, I am well experienced

Wow, that's definitely shorter than my tether. At that point if i were you, I would just remove the tether all together or have dealer see if they can get a longer one lol

And here's a few shots of my "fix" for the tether. I didn't want the cap hanging on my paint, so I put on the hook as described before. As you can see it holds the cap up out of the way so I can fill the tank, and it keeps the cap off my paint.

The “my tether is shorter than yours” jokes are endless on this thread. Very entertaining! Fortunately I’ve been blessed with a longer tether. My wife is sooooo lucky! ;)

All kidding aside, I like your 3M hook solution. I added some Xpel ppf below the filler door and on the back of the fender to protect from the dangling cap. Out here in Oregon, we are too dumb to be allowed to put gas in our own rigs, and I cringe whenever the gas station attendant is banging around back there. I may add a hook like yours.

The OP’s short tether is mind boggling.

Actually I planned on it being plastic. Speaking of spark....yesterday I left the gas station as quickly as possible as I noticed the guy beside me leaning over his car and about 12" from his gas cap with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth
Clearly a Darwin Award overachiever.

I did figure out part of the problem with the short tether after looking at my 4Runner. Since the Jeep's filler door was originally designed as an option their tether is hooked to the body. On my 4Runner it is attached to the filler door. And like most auto makers there is a small hook to attach your cap to the door when it is off while you fill up. Jeep could have easily made a hook on the door for the cap and had a place where the tether could be removed from the body and relocated to the filler door.

But then again maybe it's just one of those Jeep things I don't understand
