I don't have any first hand knowledge of trying to register a vehicle in the States without being a citizen, but just from a general knowledge standpoint, I'm fairly certain you'll have to have a place of residence in a state here in order to register it. Registration is handled on the state level, rather than federally, so each state has different rules and regulations on how the process goes. But I'm not aware of any states that do not require residency.

I'm sure if somebody has different info for you they'll chime in though.

That would probably be your best bet. The local DMV(Department of Motor Vehicles) or as it's called here in Michigan, SOS (Secretary of State) would be the best place to get definite answers, as that's who you would have to register the vehicle through. Best of luck to you!

You must have a residence in the State that you are registering it in . But even the States very somewhat. So as already mentioned, check with your local DMV, they can answer your questions.

Look up limited liability vehicle registration in Montana. That may get you a loophole to getting it registered.

I suggest that you contact America's Mailbox in South Dakota. I was "on the road" for a couple of years without a state of r4esidence and they registered my car, and arranged for my SD drivers license.

Laws vary state to state, so there’s no single correct answer. States like Florida for instance are very friendly to foreign investors and there are many non-resident aliens who own businesses, houses, and cars.

Companies like this can help provide a legal mailing address. Similar businesses exist in other places.

You shouldn't have any trouble as long as you have a place of residence to address it to. There's no law that says you have to be a citizen to own a car.
The DMV you attend should be able to provide with all the requisite paperwork.

BTW ... love your avatar picture ... pretty much says it ... LOL

The first thing dealers normally ask is for a social security number to check the trustworthiness of a buyer, and determine how serious s/he is.

Even if you intend to pay cash, dealers like to see what type of customer they are dealing with. Without a credit history in the US, you are going to have to get around this hurdle first, before you even get to the whether you can register a vehicle in a state without being a resident.

Easiest, and probably cheapest, way to do this is to form an LLC in Montana to establish "residence" in the state. Your LLC then purchases and registers the Jeep. This can be done from anywhere within the US, maybe overseas as well but I've never chased that around. The big advantage of using Montana is you won't pay sales tax on your vehicle and registrations are affordable compared to some other states. The paperwork to form an LLC is straight forward and costs about $70, but if you value simplicity just google "montana car registration llc" to find various companies that'll handle the paperwork for you. This is a common practice that people use to avoid taxes on exotic cars, RVs, and other very expensive vehicles.

I'm sure that we all have a ton of experience with registering cars. They need your address, but you already have one. They don't ask for proof of citizenship. Mostly they care about the fees for reregistering each year.
