This is a post for all you campers, overlanders, etc... people out there. We are gonna debate about the endless topic "ground tent vs. rooftop tent". Wife and I do as many camping trips as we can fit through the year. I have been camping and backpacking several times and through the years I have figured out one thing. Comfort = memorable trip. So I am not gonna lie about it, if it is going to be comfortable, I look forward to it, if it isn't going to be, not so much.
Of course comfort in the outdoors is somewhat relative. To me it is:
1) Warm food
2) Warm sleeping space
3) Comfortable sleeping bed
And that's about it. I don't really care about showers and all that. Sleeping is the big thing for me. A good nights sleep = fun trip.
We camp on the ground as we yet see no point of RTTS. We camp on a good size, good quality tent and use the REI sleeping system (queen air mattress + bedding). We find it very comfortable as long as it isn't pouring or extremely cold. I have a gas mr. buddy heater to keep the tent warm, but we turn it off at night cause it freaks the wife out (gas leaks). Carbon monoxide isn't a concern, I have a carbon monoxide detector + I leave plenty ventilation open when I use the heater.
The main question is.
What do you do? ground? top? what do you think about either option in terms of comfort, and why would you think one is more comfortable than the other. Let's keep comfort be the main topic.
