Since the bed and cab are separate like a traditional truck, the issue with that design would the lack of support the back of the cab and the front of the bed. Probably the bed sides moreso than the cab. And I think the demand for such a feature wouldn't be enough to recoup the R&D costs. You'd also need to have a removable rear window for the hard top (and a safe place to store it). The Avalanche certainly had its fans, but it never really hit critical popularity and has been discontinued. Not sure why they still couldn't build this in thou. Imagine if the cab has a panel (similar to cars do from the trunk that allow skit to be put in) that folded down towards the front seats and then another panel in the bed the folded down towards the tailgate. Would add some nice additional storage space.
I think many people getting a JT will be getting it in part because it's a 4-seater and they're going to be using the rear seats for passengers. If you need extra bed length you can always leave the tailgate down and have stuff sticking out the back, or get a bed extender to sit on the tailgate, depending on your cargo. I think that would be a far more common usage case than people going to the effort of removing a window, stowing it, and folding down a dual mid-gate setup which would likely leave you with an uneven floor preventing long items from laying flat.
I'm just hoping they put in-bed storage cubbies and accessory ports similar to what the Tacoma has. There's lots of dead space in a traditional bed that could be utilized for storage and accessories.
