Not sure why they still couldn't build this in thou. Imagine if the cab has a panel (similar to cars do from the trunk that allow skit to be put in) that folded down towards the front seats and then another panel in the bed the folded down towards the tailgate. Would add some nice additional storage space.
Since the bed and cab are separate like a traditional truck, the issue with that design would the lack of support the back of the cab and the front of the bed. Probably the bed sides moreso than the cab. And I think the demand for such a feature wouldn't be enough to recoup the R&D costs. You'd also need to have a removable rear window for the hard top (and a safe place to store it). The Avalanche certainly had its fans, but it never really hit critical popularity and has been discontinued.

I think many people getting a JT will be getting it in part because it's a 4-seater and they're going to be using the rear seats for passengers. If you need extra bed length you can always leave the tailgate down and have stuff sticking out the back, or get a bed extender to sit on the tailgate, depending on your cargo. I think that would be a far more common usage case than people going to the effort of removing a window, stowing it, and folding down a dual mid-gate setup which would likely leave you with an uneven floor preventing long items from laying flat.

I'm just hoping they put in-bed storage cubbies and accessory ports similar to what the Tacoma has. There's lots of dead space in a traditional bed that could be utilized for storage and accessories.

I have a 2005 Tacoma, Double-cab, Short bed and it has been an awesome truck. I am getting the Rubi JLU now because I want to do more rock crawling. Solid front axle, front locker, shorter wheel base and easier to put on bigger tires without the IFS. The Taco is very capable, but want to step it up now. I probably would have got a JK back in the day, but they came out a year later.

I currently have a 2011 JK sport and 2013 Tacoma. My wife and I traded in the Tacoma for a 2017 JKU yesterday, just waiting for it to arrive. The Tacoma has been great for the 4 years we've had it. For us the truck was a necessity because I had to deliver kitchen cabinets for my business and needed the tow capacity. It's also very capable offroad, it did just fine riding moderate trails in Moab when we made an unexpected trip there while crossing the country. It was stock and the bed was fully loaded. I do wish we had our JK though to hit some of the harder trails.

Both my wife and I much prefer our JK, even our 2011 with the anemic 3.8L engine. It has so much more personality and is more fun to drive. Now that I just install my kitchens instead of building and delivering them I no longer need the tow capacity, I just have a 4'x6' trailer for my tools so the Tacoma is out and a new JKU Sport S in GOBI is in!

Curious why some of you going from the Tacoma to the Wrangler don’t wait for the Scrambler. Seems like best of both worlds.

Congrats! Post up a pic when you get it! That old 3.8 isn't as bad as everyone says. I have plenty of fun driving mine. It is a blue collar engine that shows up for work every day, rain or shine, with little fanfare. It has been pretty good to me, so I don't mind it at all.

Here is my problem with what you said: “wait”.

I have a Tacoma that I live but I get bored every once in a while and want to try something else. House renovations are almost done and I’d like to try out a Wrangler. Not for hard core four wheeling, just your average commuter plus time off-road camping, shooting, or hiking etc. I would love to test drive a turbo diesel JT and see how it does, since the wife already has a SUV (Renegade), but a year sounds like a long long time lol.

Oh I hear you. I’m a pickup guy always have been. So the JT allows me to get into the Jeep family. But that has also made me follow the JL buil like no other vehicle. To the point I have thought maybe I could do a JL for a year or two then get the JT. I just want my first Jeep in the worst way.

That’s where I’m leaning. It will hold some good value and allow you to get into the game. I might not like the JT or the diesel, so waiting might be for nothing.

I am 6-2, 190, and I sat in a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off road double cab. The bottom of the visor was in my field of vision. I had to move it to the side and my field of vision was still poor because of my height. I could not adjust my seat down because it does not do that.

I sat in the back seat and was immediately uncomfortable.

It is a quality truck, just cramped for larger people.

I don't know how you could compare a Wrangler and a Truck. If you need a pickup you need one. Wrangler very few need one but get it for the fun and cool factor. I have an old 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab I have used over the years for so much for my DIY home projects lumber, Tow my Trophy boat etc only 89,000 miles I will keep it for another ten years but its not fun and it is a boat to park and has its scars. I would prioritize a pickup over anything if you have a need for it.

It’s just not as fun. I’m rolling around in a brand new 18 TRD Pro, and it just doesn’t cut it for me... Can’t wait for this Jeep to get here

#1 complaint: Comfort on moderately long trips (45 minutes or more)

Damn, two new 4wd vehicles in one year?

I've heard that sentiment from multiple people here--that even gussied up Tacoma's end up being boring and they quickly start wanting a wrangler!

Once I test drive a 17 Tacoma and hated the manual trans, I pretty much knew it was for sure Wrangler time.

I’m in a 17tacoma pro now and have owned Jeeps all my life.
After 6 months and 10k on the Tacoma
The JLU is looking like something that will happen in the new future
