Yeah, the 3 kids is gonna make that a tough decision. IMO, you're going to enjoy the Jeep so much you'll want to take the whole fam.
And even with a JLU, squeezing 2 rear facing and a front facing will be…..a squeeze. You need slim car seats (ie Radian).

Proud 2 door owner here. In 99% of circumstances I would say get the 2 door, but I think you fall in the 1 percent. Get a 4 door. There will be some times you will need to have some of the kids at one place and other kids someplace else. It is basically impossible to travel with more than one passenger and gear at the same time in a two door.

It is fun. Is it practical… no but that is the trade off. If you have a reliable SUV that will be the family vehicle you can make it work. Make sure you better half is totally onboard because it is a bit selfish since you can’t load the whole family in it. On the other hand some people have to make one car work and you have that in your SUV. Good luck… tough decision. Wasn’t hard for me because we are empty nesters.

2 doors are great weekend toys, 4 doors are more practical for daily drivers if you have kids especially. I made the switch and it’s just my wife and I. We’re considering rear seat delete, but it’s just nice to have more room

I know a lot of people love their 2 Door but I wanted to hear from people about their experience with them and see if my situation a 2 Door makes sense

Currently have a 2 year old and found out having twins in 6 months (woohoo). Because we are now a family of 5, my wife sold her vehicle and got a 3 row SUV to be able to fit 5 people and 3 car seats. This will be our long term family vehicle because I’m not

a) switching car seats back and forth all the time and
b) getting a 3 row SUV myself

Currently I have no vehicle myself but will need one. Had a 19 4 door in the past a loved it but now I’m wondering, would a 2 door work for me in this situation?

This will be just my fun vehicle really but also utility for errands, emergencies, short trips for whatever, etc. I work from home so this will not be my daily driver

I was thinking of removing the rear seats for more storage for bigger items that would be needed

Thoughts/opinions from people where would be great!
Hell no

the 2 door fun car stays in the garage and you use it “for fun”. You cannot make a 2 door vehicle your main car with 3 kids.

wife gets the land monster, dad gets a sports sedan at the smallest, or really anything else with back seats.

Wait, the SUV is the street monster, the 2dr Jeep is the land monster, albeit a small one.
And OP didn't say anything about the 2dr being the main car (are we allowed to refer to these Jeeps as cars in this thread btw???)

I greatly prefer 2 door but IMO your 3rd child puts you into the Minivan Jeep zone. You can only put 2 child seats in a 2dr. If your other vehicle is temporarily out of commission for whatever reason your 2dr will not be able to transport all 3 kids. But a 4dr will.

A 2dr would mean you don't have a backup for your Clan Wagon, which can be a pretty big downside.

If it is just the two of you… the back seat delete is a no brainer. Gives you a bunch more room! Here is me unloading a Kamado Joe on a pallet from Costco.

Congrats on the pending addition to your family inventory.

If the JL's mission brief limits it to Fun and other non-critical usage, I'll suggest that it should be vehicle #3.

That is to say, take the absence of redundancy [of the capabilities of your wife's SUV] seriously. Give some thought to purchasing a second vehicle that can at the very least safely carry five adult passengers. Children do have this annoying tendency of growing up. ;) More to the point, if the 3-row SUV would ever be out of commission for any length of time, what will you do to keep all five of you mobile? Using just that single metric, a JL wouldn't be able to leave the driveway.

Maybe vehicle #2 can in fact be a JLU. That the four door Jeep has been a smashing sales success isn't accidental. FCA correctly twigged that if they built it, the families would come...checkbooks in hand.

In my opinion you would regret the 2 door. I have had both and enjoyed both but don't let the 2 door hard cores lead you to believe the unlimited is not just as fun. I haul 2 and sometimes 3 of my grandkids in the 4 door and it was a chore just getting in the back seat of the 2 door.

Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, the 2-door is a bad idea in the situation that you describe. I would hold off until those kids got older.

You’ll never fit 3 car seats in a 4 door even. Especially since two will be the bulky rear facing infant seats. I have a 5 and a 6 year old and we had to get a 4Runner to even get a rear facing seat behind the wife. The Jeep wouldn’t allow her to slide her seat far enough back.

So for those who are saying he can use a 4 door, he probably cannot, especially easily or safely. If that is the case then he must either buy a minivan, 3 row suv, or not transport the entire family at once.

If it was me I’d get the 2 door and keep the backseat available to transport one or two kids. My family for example rarely all rides together during the week, only on weekends. There will be times when you may need to take one to the doctor while everyone else stays home etc. Once you have that 3rd kid, life totally changes. No more table for four at a restaurant etc., life gets way way harder when you deviate from the family of four profile. Might as well enjoy some part of your life.

Oh I immediately lost the rear seat in our two door, I’m considering deleting the rear seats in our current 4 door for the extra room ? it’s funny how quick you find ways to fill up the extra space

Can you handle the look of the sad faces of one or two of the children not being able to go for a ride with you, because they can't fit?
