Ths approach to hiding a spare key is laughable at best.

Corroded/rusty key in short time and.... total pain in the arse to get to the secured key... and you need tools to remove it... Absolutely nonsensical to secure a spare key like that..
1. be smart and wrap the key in tape.

2. no one would mind getting the key if it is between that and being stranded

3. tools are not required to undo a wingnut.

if you have a better way, post it. share your knowledge.

I went to my go-to locksmith who's been fair on everything - he wanted $45 for a copy; said the machine to cut this kind of key cost him 5 figures.

Went to the dealer who had just got their new "very expensive" key cutting machine. They said the manager was the only person they had who'd been trained to operate it - they did if for $25.
This was Nov. of '21.
Wanting an analog spare that was easy to carry, I too paid $25 in Nov. 2021 to have this key blank matched to my fob via a router cut key machine.

The OP barely lasted a week here before he got the boot.

I think there's a protection feature that prevents the doors from locking when the fob is inside. Or I may be thinking of one of our other vehicles.
My Sport has electric locks and that has been my experience too. We had a thread about this around a year or more ago where people told how to do it. (I was on a camping trip sleeping in the back of the Jeep and was wondering how to lock the doors from the inside.)

That's a Sport S. ?

The separate Sport trim isn't affected by the fob's proximity to the vehicle, vis-a-vis the functioning of its manual door locks.

Exactly what I want, just as a last resort.
Only place local I could find wanted 25 bucks. Yeahhhhh, no. I don't mind someone making a living, but I don't like getting screwed either.

Have a good friend that is a locksmith, but doesn't have the machine required to cut this particular key, otherwise the cost would be 1 beer. He said the blanks are about a buck, in quantity.
And the machine the locksmith had to buy to do it is expensive. You’re not getting screwed, you’re just a tight ass.

not looking to start it. just looking for one that provides entry.

A backup to the keys locked inside scenario
It's good to have a backup key available.

I once locked my keys in my jeep and it was nearly a complete disaster. The locksmith said he couldn't make it out for at least another 45 minutes, it was just about to start pouring rain, and I had the top off.

I have a '22 Sport with manual locks & wanted a key with a head for easily working the locks. Blanks can be found cheaply, they are type SIP22. I like to go running & don't like carrying the fob, I wrap it in foil & hide it. I searched high & low locally & among many locksmiths, only 1 could make a copy at $40 if you brought them the blank. The big chains do not have the needed equipment. There's an ebay outfit called virginkeys that will make copies for $36 with the caveat that you must send them the original key & blank; I went with that as opposed to driving across town & waiting. If you can find someone local for $25 I'd jump on it.

Were the doors off too?

He added such gems as the "relationship with your dealer is a myth" threads. I can't imagine why he got banned. Lol.

Pretty sure the locking sensor doesn't "know" if your fob is inside or outside
At least they do in GM products. When you leave the fob in the vehicle, it honks the horn three times when you close the door and the fob is in it. I see it on a daily basis because when a car comes in, we roll the drivers window down and then leave the key/fob in it. Thus the honking when I get out of the car. You also hear it at campgrounds when someone shows up at 9pm towing their trailer with a GM Truck. They leave the key in it and thus every tie they get out of it, that loud honking happens. It's like a "just so everyone knows, I'm here".

On a Jeep, you can lock the doors with one key in it.

I used to hide a spare key behind the rear license plate, using the plate screw to keep it in place. Worse case I could remove the plate to get at the key with a dime as a screw driver. Keys never corroded after years of storage there.

Just the key alone won't start it. You'll need at least a RFID chip that can only be replicated by Mopar by custom order as part of a complete fob purchase.
Locksmith can duplicate a key if you have at least one fob. I had a mobile service do mine and bought the key on the spot from the mobile locksmith.

What did that cost you?
It has been over a year now, but I think $200 give or take a bit. It was a franchise locksmith service. The guy serviced many dealers in my area of various makes. I think I met him at a Toyota dealership near my work and he got it done in about 15 min.
