It is loudest on cold starts. Does anyone else get this sound at start? Sounds like grinding, maybe lack of oil since it's not pumping yet? Any ideas how to get rid of it?

It almost sounds like air trying to pass a closed "gate" or divert that isn't quite closed. Being completely unfamiliar with that motor I'm not sure what that could be but it doesn't sound like grinding to me. Doubtful on the oiling issue since you don't hear it right at start-up

Can you tell where in the engine compartment it is coming from?

Not sure yet. I want to investigate it more, but its only on a cold start, like 1st start of the day. I may try starting, turning off, then starting again to see if it repeats on subsequent starts before warming up the engine.

Note: It is a 2023 with only 2900miles on the engine.

I don't remember if I heard it right after delivery, but the last couple months I know I've been hearing it.

It sounds nds like air to me as well. It's not a grind or oil. Could be a loose bracket....

My 4Runner used to make a noise that started around the same time and lasted about as long. Had something to do with an exhaust divert valve to heat the catalytic converter more quickly for max efficiency where it basically diverted or recirc'ed the warm air to the Cat at start-up. Anyone know if this engine, has a similar feature for emissions?

So I tried again yesterday, only made the sound on 1st start, even though I only ran for a few seconds.

I did leave it on to keep watching and listening. After about a minute, a lever moves and the engine gets a lot quieter. I read somewhere that this could be the wastegate or other to warm up the cats or turbo or something.

Still don't know where that 1st sound is coming from.

as far at that quicker 1st sound I'm not sure. But that louder more continuous sound is definitely something that has to do with warming up like recirculation/whatever has been previously mentioned. I'm impressed how quickly this thing warms up. Mine is definitely very loud for the first minute or so and then as soon as it's get to a certain temp quiets down immediately. Seems to be a "complaint" some people have posted regarded the 2.0L is how noisy it is on start up.

Eh, it's a jeep. It's noisy. I guess it depends on what car you've come from in the past too. I've owned a soft top convertible, an XJ and now this JL. None of them were quiet though the wrangler is by far the quietest overall lol

Are you talking about the ‘buzzy’ rattle that starts right after start, and last for maybe a second or so?

Mine does it too.

That rattling sound at *EXACTLY* the 4 second mark is something my 2021 JLUR 2.0T has made since I got it. (It isn't always there. Sometimes is, sometimes isn't.) And I always wanted to record a video that captured it. Thank you!

Now... if only someone could say what's doing all that rattling!

I hear that same flutter sound at the :04 mark in the vid. My JL has 28K on it now, and have heard it for as long as I can remember.

If I started getting spooked about all of the bad noises my 2.0 makes when cold I’m going to be constantly worried. That motor runs great when warm but is a noisy mess when cold. Loud valves, noisy injectors, and really disconcerting sounds. Does not give me confidence for longevity…though these engines seem to be holding up. Geez…my 1977 Pinto in high school sounded better….?

If the lever that you mention goes between the turbo and a black plastic box that's closer to the firewall, that is part of the automatic wastegate control mechanism.

+1.

When the 2.0T in my JLU is fully warmed up, it is at idle one of the quietest engines I've ever owned, full stop.

Cold starts are noisy, though, no doubt about it.

Add mine to the list. It's done it since brand new, and I thought it was rattling due to a loose heat shield or something, caused by the sudden surge in RPMs on cold start.

But all the other replies makes it seem it may just be normal for these engines.

@Ericthemantis I did an oil change 2 weeks ago and mine appears to have stopped doing it. I did feel like it was getting louder as it was getting closer to oil change time.

I'm thinking this is relevant...my oil came out looking a bit watered down and smelling like gasoline, which I know happens to these turbo engines when running shorter local trips often. I'll be doing my next oil change much sooner, but I do suspect the oil getting some gasoline in it may be related to my Jeep having the noise. I listened to your video again and mine made that exact first sound.
