I been reading about snatch rings and how they can reduce the load on the winch.

So under no friction it exerts half the load but pulls at half the speed. Effectively some form of gearing... I studied pullies in physics once upon a time.. can someone refresh me on what is going on here and how this happens!

Thanks

You got the jist of it.

When you have a line going from your winch, to a snatch block on the load and back to your Jeep both lines are pulling the load. Not exactly evenly because of friction but close enough. So that results in a mechanical advantage, where your winch is only pulling half the load (or close enough to half), but has to pull twice as far to move the load the same distance.

Thanks, I understood how I can use it to recover myself using a tree or another stationary car. How about if I am helping someone else who is stuck and does not have a winch? Is there use for a snatch ring? How does the set up in that scenario go .?

Not only do you get the mechanical advantage, your also pulling closer to the drum with that much line out so you have more power at the winch also.

You've got it exactly right.

The normal process would be to hook your winch to a tree to recover yourself, or hook your winch to another vehicle to recover it. IF your winch doesn't have enough pull for one of these operations then a snatch block will help. You can connect the snatch block to the tree and run the winch line through the block and back to your Jeep. This gives you twice the pull against your Jeep but pulls half as fast. If you are recovering another vehicle you connect the snatch block to the other vehicle, run your winch line through it and back to your Jeep or to another tree.

A snatch block to help with recovering someone else would help if you can’t get a straight pull. It won’t increase your recovery power but it would help at awkward angles assuming you could anchor the block to something.

It won't increase your recovery power?

The thing that the snatch block is attached to will see up to twice the force as your winch is putting out, depending on the angles of the 2 ropes.

Exactly. That's why I questioned what @Valpo Jeep said.

If you are using the pulley to simply change the direction of force then there is no mechanical advantage.

No mechanical advantage if used like this
