I appreciate all of the input.....its good to hear this unit will work out. I hear a lot of snatch block discussion, but little about soft shackles and recovery rings.....any reason for that?
Should have elaborated on my original post with what I meant by a good recovery kit.

Mine includes multiple soft shackles, a tree saver, winch line extension, a couple kinetic recovery ropes and a couple metal shackles, pair of gloves plus the aforementioned snatch block.

My theme is to minimize weight and hard points in as many places as possible should something snap.

Metal shackles have theor place however for example connecting them to a closed loop bumper where a soft shackles may fray or simply won't fit.

If you haven't done so already, suggest. good offroad recovery class to get the basics down.

It's like a miniature Army H08 recovery course. Our rule for how much line pull goes like this :
Mire factor of 1 is equal to the weight of the vehicle, as it's loaded. Mire 1 is any surface, mud, sand, snow, up to the bottom of the axles.
Mire factor of 2 is double the weight. And is when the axles are in all the way to the top of the tires.
Mire 3 is triple the weight, and calculated as anything above 2.

Remember that the winch rating is only for the first wrap and drops a bit with each added wrap layer. And a snatch block causes a friction loss of roughly 10%.

From my understanding rings are the same as a snatch block. I'm sure there is more friction loss with the ring over a snatch block. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

This is what I would use. A tree saver, soft shackle and ring, then the line pulls back to the Jeep with a thimble and hard shackle onto the bumper. Someone said above and I am the same way, I wouldn't use a soft shackle through a bumper recovery point. Sharp edge and you will saw the soft shackle.

Your full kit should include at least a tree strap, couple soft shackles or more, a recovery ring or two, and a winch line extension, and so many other things you could fill your rig. You don't need to buy everything all at once, if you wheel with others. But if you're a "go-it-alone" type, maybe sooner than later. The cheap stuff is a spade shovel and a tree saw. 4 of us got caught without the saw last weekend and found a tree laying across our path.

With the popularity of soft shackles, some bumper manufacturers like ARB have started to chamfer their recovery points. I would like to see more of a radius, but this feature is worth considering when purchasing bumpers.
