Did you check the coolant level ? let just hope you do not have the reverse, oil in coolant....
Speaking of and on a related note to the original topic, it "is" bad to mix different types of engine coolant....and even worse to mix it with oil. :CWL:

Relax the answers he was given are A-OK. There is absolutely no problem nor should there be any concern with some mix of weights of these oils.
I’m starting to regret ever having responded to this thread…

This a discussion forum, so we discuss :)
On the other end if I was in is situation a would drain and refill rather sooner than later but this is my OCD showing here.

Your good! It will not hurt anything. I do my own oil changes. I use 5w 30 synthetic in my 3.6 since I bought it.

I actually run without a head gasket so my coolant and oil mix regularly. The color of the smoke lets me know when it's time to top both of them up, and because they're constantly depleting, the fluids are always fresh.

@brynamic now that you know it MIGHT have an oil consumption issue, you need to watch it to see if the level goes down and travel with a quart of oil, funnel, and rag in your travel kit to avoid any future issues.

Myself I buy it in the 5 quart jug variety and keep old jugs on hand to fill as needed. The bottle seal is sometimes an issue so I wrap the bottle threads with electrical tape to help seal like you would with pipe tape on pipe connections.

Personally, I did not know that driving a quart low is worse than mixing two oils. That anecdotal wisdom had so far eluded me. Hence my earlier comment referencing somewhat incorrect anecdotal wisdom I had picked up over the years (though that is largely based on high-performance engines and not on Jeep workhorse engines. Mixing two oils can be done in a pickle but necessitating an immediate full oil change once out of the pickle. At least that’s what BMW M and Porsche specify. Ok maybe not so anecdotal then. Also does 20% sound like a lot of mixing?!)

However, I appreciate your continued effort to educate me.
My old Audi had a 7 quart sump and it would give you a warning once you hit a quart low but the idiot message also said its safe to continue driving a quart low until you can stop and get a quart to add.

Afaik, the recommended procedure for checking the oil is the same between 3.6L and 2.0T engines. Get it hot, shut it down, wait 5 minutes and then check the level.

Think it has something to do with the 2-stage oil pump in both. Usually cold and hot are the same for mine, but one time I freaked out when the stick was completely dry. Did the thing, and it was perfect 👌
I think it's time to do a test.

There is a rumor that jeep engine design to includes running 1 qt low and 1 qt over. Not sure for you but I do not really want to test that

I'm not planning for any (off roading) myself, but if you do I'd for sure try to NOT run a quart low on oil. Not sure where the sump (oil pickup) resides within the oil pan of a Jeep, but that can be critical in some sitluations.
I own an SSR, it has a Vette 6.0 engine. But in the SSR version, its oil pan has a horizonal hole thru it cause it is the same pan used on 4wd Chevy Trail blazers. Their oil pickup is in the front of the pan and off road usage has caused several faillures of the engine due to oil starvation when the oil is slung to the rear of the pan where it cannot be circulated by the oil pickup.
Many SSR owners have resolved this potential problem in one of two ways...........Some (including me), add an extra quart beyond the full mark. Under full acceleration, this helps avoid oil starvation. Other SSR owners have switched out the stock oil pan with a C6 Vette oil pan and relocated pickup that resolves this problem

What do you suggest? I've checked my oil hot and cold many different times in the 3.6L and the only time I've gotten an obvious false reading was from checking too soon after being hot. Checked it cold and it was fine, drove around the block then checked immediately and it wasn't registering on the dipstick at all, then waited the 5 minutes and it was fine.

From what I can figure, checking cold after letting it sit overnight and checking hot after 5 minutes seems to be the same result in the 3.6L, but checking hot before a 5-minute cool-down is inaccurate.

Eta, And from what I recall hearing around here iirc, overnight cold vs the 5-minute check can be completely different for the 2.0T engine, but I don't have one of those to test. Also, completely just a hunch, but I'm thinking the dry dipstick immediately after hot is only due to the 2-stage oil pump being in high-pressure mode (from load/acceleration) and that it likely wouldn't occur if kept at the standard ~32PSI for the entire drive (which there's a <0% chance of that happening with all the steep hills around here, so can't really test that either).

Iirc, it was @mwilk012 that had stated the 2-stage pump had something to do with the recommended 5-minute checking procedure, but I could be mistaken.

I love that yet another oil thread is still going on.

We need an entire forum section dedicated to talking/arguing/creating more myths about oil.

First thread should be running different seed oils and seeing which one smokes the slowest.

I find myself saying that often around here. And this thread ain't that bad...I haven't seen any of the JLWranglerforums kids show up yet. Maybe it's because school is back in session.

I did not expect to read these answers. I always read and heard that mixing oils of different viscosity and weight is a big no-no-no-no.

it’s not like he’s trying an oil change for 5 quarts of 5w-30. He’s asking to mix 0w-20 with 5w-30 which are completely different specs.

personally, I would not risk it and instead, drive a little further on 4 quarts until the next place that as 0w-20. I’m sure there’s one before the 1200 miles run out. Or do a full oil change and put 5 quarts of 5w-30
This line of thinking is entirely incorrect.
