So I had a leak at the upper oil pan. It was still under warranty so I took to the dealer and they fixed it. The only problem is that they used way too much rtv. I asked them about it and they said that there is a “lip” so the rtv only goes out and can’t come inside the engine. Would that be normal?

Looks pretty sloppy to me. I wouldn't think its going to hurt anything but it sure doesn't look like they tried to do their best work.

Yea. I’m only worried that if it’s like that on the outside, it could be like that on the inside as well

Considering how OCD I am.....Id worry too. Probably would drive me nuts and Id go to other dealerships to see what they had to say about it.

The problem with using that much RTV is that the squeez out can plug up the oil screen. That mechanic needs some training. That's just excessive. 🤪 I'd probably never sleep until I pulled the lower pan and looked up in there for squeeze out.

I used to work in gaskets. That’s not a crazy amount, but it’s definitely a lot. You always want some squeeze-out so you know you have enough. At an engine plant, they have it down to the gram so there’s no waste, it adds up when you’re making millions of engines. The lip inside will only trap so much, but I’ve never seen gasket squeeze-out inside an engine break off.

I think I’d be more concerned about how much is inside the ports on the pan.

This is or should be called Form In Place gasket material.

I think thats to much, but it dries pretty solid, like tire rubber solid, it's not going anywhere.

Anyone have the picture from the bottom looking up to the bottom of the block? There should be a really thin valley all around the block that the FIP material rides in and then seals at it is torqued up. The idea of FIP is to not waste one spec of material, apparently they don't teach that anymore at school.

Found one, very faint line which is a half round groove, right side still has fip material.

If there was a real gasket there I would think there would be more of a mark.

I would still take it back in and ask "really, dude"?
