I am at my wits end with the tire shine products found at local auto part stores. I’ve tried a few different ones, but mostly use Maguire’s Tire Foam. Unfortunately it leaves a brown residue behind.
ultimately what I’m looking for is a dull shine (I don’t like the super glossy look).

what have you had success with that does NOT leave the tires with brown stains?

I love Stoner More Shine Tire Finish- spray it on (goes on shiny) let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it off- leaves a nice matte black look with no gloss, despite the name. Here's the look right after that. It stays black for a long time, and the KO2's never turn brown, unless it gets wheeled!

I also use the Rim Brim- a really great cheap cover that keeps the tire spray from getting all over your clean wheels, but it looks like that company is out of business. I think there are several other similar products.

I’ve tried several products over the years. I found NO TOUCH TIRE CARE FOAM to be the best.

It does the best job of removing dirt and grime off large off-road tires, and leaving a nice, dull shine afterwards. And unlike the stuff they use at the tire shop, there’s no residue flinging onto the sides of the Jeep.

The only catch is that you better remember to hose down the driveway right under the tires to avoid bleaching the concrete. But that’s no big deal.

Good luck.

I don’t use tire shine on the Jeep because it comes right off on the rocks. But on the wife’s Volvo I use 303 if I’m out of Tuf Shine Clearcoat. It lasts for weeks or longer depending on weather and if you rub the tires on curbs etc. It’s an actual coating much like wax and not coming off on the first wash or rain.

No matter what tire shine you use, clean the tires first. I use Meguiars Hot Rims Wheel and Tire Cleaner for the tires. I have a hard bristled brush (for the tires only, not the wheels). Make sure they are clean. Then, I always use a water based dressing. Surprisingly, Amor All is water based, you can actually cut it with water if you find the shine too much. I religiously use AMMO Mud Tire Gel - one coat make the tire nice and black with low shine, two if you want more shine.

After trying just about every product out there, I found Tuf Shine. I've been using it since you had to buy it direct from the guy who started the company. Hands down, it is the longest lasting tire protectant out there. The number of coats dictates the gloss level. The one caveat is that you have to deep clean your tires before application which can take several repeated cleanings before you get off all of the dirt.

I second the 303 for tires. Use a small amount for a matte black finish that wont spray. Additional coats will add gloss, but like you I prefer a matte/satin finish.

I don’t use tire shine on my tires, I don’t like the wet look. I just use dawn dish soap and a scrub brush for my tires. Once you use tire shine, you almost have to keep using it for the life of the tires as they will turn brown.

Griots satin finish in the spray can. Goes on easy with no mess, and if it gets on your wheels while applying it’s no biggie.
