Hey all, new here. I have seen several similar threads, but just wanted to ask (some of) you experts as it pertains to my specific situation.

I just got an ‘18 Sahara JLU and promptly started modding. I installed a 2.5” lift and swapped the OEM wheels and Mastercraft tires for some Falken Wildpeak R/T 35/12.5r17 with Fuel wheels. What I didn’t consider is how HEAVY those Falkens are at 79.2 lbs, and my Vandal wheels are 34 lbs, bringing my total load on the gate to 113.2 lbs. I did install the RC reinforcement brace and relocation bracket (with the stock carrier), and although the tire fits without touching the bumper, I’m getting a little sag and have to lift the gate some to close.

I have seen that the stock carrier recommended weight limit is 85 lbs, but I’m not sure what the swing gate / hinges can support… and obviously by adding the brace and bracket, my gross weight is probably closer to 130.
Do I need to get this spare off before my gate caves or hinges snap? I’m not sure how much weight the RC add-ons permit for.

What is a viable solution and the cheapest way to get rid of the sag? I really don’t want to replace the bumper. I ordered the Spartacus HD hinge casting last night, but don’t want to install it if there’s a better option, an entirely different carrier is required, or if it just won’t work. Thanks!

Just installed the Mopar tailgate reinforcement today. Been running 35s (KO2) for a year on the stock tailgate without issue.

Have 37 (KO2) now so wanted a bit of reinforcement and also needed to raise the spare a bit.

I can now go buy a 5th 37 for my spare to match the 4 others. Will see how it does long term.

(35 pictured).

I went with the Poison Spyder frame mounted swing out tire carrier for my 39s. I have modded it a few times because of my heavy tire/wheel combo (138 lbs)
I will be welding a frame brace this week and if that fails, I'll think about removing the tailgate and doing a "pre runner" type bed carrier. ?‍♂

I just installed the Rusty's tire carrier.

It's pretty nice. The tailgate opens and closes better than stock.

The install isn't bad if you don't drop your rear view camera.

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like the HD hinge reinforcement will be enough to support the weight and get rid of the sag. .. Still not sure though if the stock carrier itself is strong enough or if I need to replace that as well. It’s mounted to the relocation bracket with better hardware, so hopefully it will be fine.

I run the TeraFlex setup on my current Wrangler but have used the Spartacus in the past and it will handle all the weight you can throw at it.

Thanks - Good to know. Would that be with the stock carrier (with Spartacus HD hinge) or would I need the Spartacus hinge + carrier?

I have the RC reinforcement plate and relocation piece. I’m running 35s. Probs 100lb. And isn’t worth the money.

The reinforcement plate that bolts into the hinges comes with hinge bolts that are too long and they push the trail ready plastic piece right off the inside of the gate. It rattles even though everything is tight. Had to cut bolts down 1/2”. For it to actually work.
They half coated the relocation plate, so is rusting after few weeks. The warranty replacement they sent was welded askew so is unusable. I’m waiting on a third one. RC QC is non existent. The bolt issue has been going on since the JL launched and still isn’t fixed. Check any third party reviews.
you can see how it’s popped out. Also the shoulder bolts they provide only a few threads actually catch since the shoulder is almost as long as the oem bolts. Very few threads are holding your hinge plate on. Is a very dangerous setup to have all that weight held in by maybe 3 threads. I’ve sent all this to RC. They don’t seem to care.

I have the RC relocation bracket on my 19 sport s and have had no issues at all in the 50k miles it has been on. I run a 35x12.5x17 toyo open country atII and Black Rhino Barstow wheels. I wheel pretty regularly on the rocks and it is also my DD. The only thing I di was extend the bump stops so that they were tight against my tire. If I were going above a 35" I would definitely get a HD carrier but for a 35" you will be fine.

I agree, the RC tailgate reinforcement is trash. It's not even worth the $80 price it costs. I wouldn't use it if it was free.

I used it for a couple months, in an effort to reduce cost since I'd already dumped so much $$$ into my jeep, and it didn't take long to figure out that it's actually worse than just not even using anything at all. It's not only ugly and poorly made, but my tailgate sag wasn't fixed at all, I think it was actually worse than before.

I upgraded to Terraflex HD and never looked back. Pretty sure I could do pullups on the open tailgate now.
