Thoughts on Advanced Safety Group

I didn't order it and don't feel like I'm missing anything. I love highway driving the way I like to drive and I don't need the car telling me how to do it (or putting on brakes for me - that kind of scares me). I also am probably the rare person that doesn't like to use cruise control period. I just like driving on the highway and don't need help. Now I do like the REGULAR safety group features, I've gotten rather spoiled by the blind spot alerts on my current car and wouldn't order another vehicle without it.

ETA - I'm pretty sure I'd hate this because I'm that aggressive driver. I told my dealer I want the freedom to tailgate when I want to - I think he was shocked. Driver know thyself!

IMHO since you asked (LOL) save your money, the majority of us know how to drive and when you're offroad it won't be used. These systems make people forget how to drive- cruise control is good-watch the car in front of you, watch the white lines and stay between them-besides if someone cuts you off which happens you normally have to brake anyway. We have this on the family car, and I despise it. But whatever you choose be careful anyway and good luck

Had it on my Grand Cherokee and it had pluses and minuses. Adaptive cruise made slow traffic easier since the car did all the accelerating and braking for you, The collision assist was not fantastic. On a windy road it locked up the brakes because it thought we were going to hit the car in the middle turn lane. Also when merging on freeways if someone got too close it would slam the brakes. The auto headlights were nice on longer road trips, but it was a bit distracting when it was a busier road and they turn on and off a lot.

I have to say, I'm kinda surprised, yet not, at how many people think/justify that if you have the extra tech that you suddenly become brain dead.

Why can't someone be a good driver and have the extra tech?

It's funny that some of the people commenting against the tech, like not even using cruise control are part of the reason others of us are in favor of the tech like adaptive cruise control. ?

The advanced safety group was only a $716 option on my JLU. I think it is worth money as backup/insurance.

From what I'm seeing on here and from my own experiences, the advanced safety group does not play well with aggressive driving. So if you are an aggressive driver you may not get your moneys worth out of it or even hate it if you use it.

I'm curious what year your grand cherokee is. My grand is a 15 and I have never had that much trouble with the safety options. It has only falsely applied the brakes I think twice in 7 years and 70k miles of everything from rush hour in and around major cities to rural remote dirt roads. I do know that it requires the vehicle in front of you to completely clear your lane before letting you go by/accelerate back to cruise setpoint. I do agree that the auto high beams leave a little bit to be desired.

I ordered it, and I am thankful I did. It really shines on interstate trips. As someone already pointed out you need to be mindful not to get complacent. I just think of it as a helper, but I am still in control.

The adaptive cruise control is such a pleasure to have - that alone is worth it. Also, the deduction on your insurance really offsets the upfront cost - so keep that in mind

Asking if a factory option is worth it is a waste of time… fun for sure, but still a waste.

Is a $100 steak dinner worth it? Is First Class airfare worth it? Are $1000 Golf lessons in Florida worth it?

Best to take ownership and look at the value the purchase has for you. Each one of us values things differently, so best to figure out what value the option will have for you and you only, not a whole group who may have vegans, or may fly Frontier, or just plain hate Golf…. See the point?

I ordered it and the other items make it worthwhile. It is not a nanny car and is not for rush hour traffic in the rain , snow yada. We need to understand when and where it is useful, as in the above posts examples.

Think about all the “nanny electronics” in modern airliners, they manage the drudgery, reduce input overload so the pilots can respond to other more urgent issues. None of these are an excuse for a driver to become complacent or text more.

This is highway/mall stuff, not for trails. If you don’t like it or don’t drive more open roads then don’t get it.

Not in the Subaru. Once it detects a vehicle in front of you, it will automatically scale down to about .5mph under their speed. Then increase back up to your set mph once the vehicle ahead gets some distance, then decrease once it sees it again, ad infinitum. The dealer told her to leave it at that set distance, so there it stays. Maybe it's different in a Jeep though.

Next time just hit the gas if safe to pass, should allow that. Works on most ACC that I drove.

I find it to be great. I almost didn’t buy it but glad I did. The ACC alone made it worth it for me. Someone compared their Subaru functionality of the acc above but it appears to work different in the Jeep. You set the speed and the distance you want it to maintain, once it gets to that distance it does not slow down then speed back up, it simply matches the speed of that vehicle and just maintains that pre-determined distance from the vehicle infront of you. Of course it will come to a complete stop, and will even accelerate from that stop again. (After a certain time stopped though it will disengage). If you don’t want to use the ACC you can actually engage cruise control with a different button right next to the ACC button and the cruise control will function like cruise control in any non-ACC vehicle. The other features like emergency stop etc are peace of mind too, plus it got me a slight discount on insurance so there’s that. It’s one of those things I got because I said if I got into a wreck and the advanced safety group would have prevented it I would have been sorely regretful for not buying it. So I did buy it and it turned out to be probably the best and most used option on my jeep so far besides the upgraded radio.

The adaptive cruise / driver assist in our AMG is pretty awesome in heavy traffic. It starts and stops the car with traffic.

Being able to freak out passengers by taking your hands completely off the wheel is priceless.

My old job has vans with it. Now my current job has vans with nothing. When I order my JLURXR it will have all the "bells and whistles" nothing less will do for the price it's definitely worth it

The collision avoidance has given me a few nudges that I think have probably saved me.

The auto high beams almost got me some road rage. I was following someone who was following someone. The first person was going about 5 mi under speed limit on a 2 lane road (no passing zone). We got under some tree canopy and it triggered my auto-on lights. My lights were on high beam when I last had them on, so when my lights came on, they went immediately to high beam. It then detected the car in front of me and switched to low beam. The guy I was behind thought I was flashing my lights at him and got a bit perturbed. We exchanged #1 signals to each other at the red light and I thought we was going to get out to confront me. Of course this was one of the few times that I left the house unarmed. The light turned green, he went one way, I went the other.

I won't go without it.

I love the adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beams on my Ram truck, so I ordered the Advanced Safety Group (ASG) on my new Rubicon Diesel, which has not yet arrived. The only thing I do not like is you have to buy the Safety Group package before you can add the ASG. I do not like the Safety Group functions because I do not like all the blind-spot, cross-path detection, and park-assist beeping.
