I had a similar dilemma years ago. Mine was with a 90 weight gear oil cap in the differential of a 88 IROC convertible. I kept thinking the gears won’t care but the chewed up plastic will be hard on the bearings. Plus the plastic will be light enough to always be in the oil, so the chances of it getting in a bearing are 100%.

A transfer case would be worse. Those needle bearings don’t need much to keep them from rotating. When the needle bearings don't rotate then the load is always on a few. Certain failure. I would try the pincher grabber thing someone above suggested.

I would 100% get this out whether it is the transfer case or differential. Just for future reference most if not all of the major lubricant players make the ez fill pouches so you won't run into this issue again. Just squeeze and fill. Nothing to come apart and fall in.

I had one of those side barbs break off and fall into the manual transmission on my old TJ. I debated on letting it get ground up as well. I spent about an hour fishing around from the drain hole until I finally got it out.

FOD, no matter how small, should be removed. (What everyone else said.)

You will hate yourself if you post here, read the solicited advice, and then not listen. Lol. If you need some help, let me know. I'll walk you through each step to take the case apart without destroying anything.

Got my work space set up in Pueblo West, CO now. (Rented a space for Jeep work until I get a house and shop put together.) I'll make a post in the CO section today sometime. Gonna make a run to NC to grab all my tools within the next month and then work can begin.

He's referring to the transfer case and it needs serviced like any other transmission; just accidently dropped a piece of plastic in it is all.

Are you referring to the transfer case or differential?
If the differential, you can pull the cover, clean out and re-install the cover which has a reusable gasket.
If you didn’t drive it yet I would clean out the drain pan and reuse the new fluid.
Look at the pic... that's a t-case

My Gosh, don't even think about leaving it in there. Go to harbor freight, they sell a cheap boroscope with a picker on it. Take your time and go fish it out.

Even though the tool will cost you consider 2 things, first it will be much easier then pulling the transfer, second by the time you add up the fluid, renting a trans or tranfer case jack and any gaskets the boroscope will be cheaper. And rather then taking you the day you will have it removed in under 30 minutes.

Plus you will have the tool next time it happens, lol.

What the hell are those tangs on the plastic nozzle for anyways? They look exactly like something designed to go though a hole and not come back out. Just like what happened.
