So, this fell in the transfer box while I was doing an oil change.

Part of me thinks I can leave it in to get chewed up by the gears and then do a couple oil changes in the next week to flush out the plastic grinds?
Or, should I pull the transfer box front cover and get it out?

How hard is it to pull off the cover? Do I have to remove the driveshaft too? Do I need to replace seals and gaskets?

thanks for your help.

Are you referring to the transfer case or differential?
If the differential, you can pull the cover, clean out and re-install the cover which has a reusable gasket.
If you didn’t drive it yet I would clean out the drain pan and reuse the new fluid.

Leaving it in to let it get chewed up sounds like an awesome idea šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø
If it’s the differential it would eat that plastic up and grind it and become one with the fluid.
I would still remove it though.

Clearly the transfer case by the chain in the picture, do not leave it in. The pump in the case isn't very robust and you'll destroy the case if it plugs up. Pull it apart and get it out.
Ahh, the second pic didn’t show up for me earlier.
And he had me confused with removing the axle and cover comment

you have a bore scope so I would just keep messing with it until you get it by the drain hole..use a bicycle spoke to manuever it in place and bend a little hook in the end and pull it out.

perfect evidence why buying used is RISKY!!

I would try to fish it out, but certainly not leave it in there. Sure, it’ll get chewed up, but so will the parts doing the chewing.

this video will help you see what you need to do to fish it out. might also try getting some compressed air to move it the plastic piece towards the drain hole. looking at everything should really not be that difficult to get it out.
does a jl wrangler transfer case turn all the time
