Theft Deterrent. Discuss

What is you opinion on a Wrangler with a visible steering wheel lock?

  • Good idea. Anything to slow down a thief, or make him move on to the next vehicle.

  • The thief or a random passerby is going to see it as a challenge, and target that Jeep specifically!

  • Waste of money. If the 'right' thief wants it, it's going to be stolen no matter what you do to it.

  • Why do you keep calling them thieves? No one says that.

eBay: We can help by making sure there is not a market place to profit. I reported a 5 set of XR wheels/tires that were listed by a 1st time user, just setup days before, and this was their first sell...bid was already up to $2,550 plus $349 shipping. eBay to their credit, took the listing down. I know their are other sites known for theft sales...

LOL, you beat me to it with the Trunk Monkey!

Anyhow, here is a video on someone easily and quietly defeating "The Club."

The guy talks and works slow in this video because it wasn't that kind of demo so you can fast forward to about the 1:25 time index. He's finished by 1:50 but again, he was taking all the time in the world and pausing too. If he was focused and in a rush, it looks like 5 to 10 seconds to get it out of the way.

However, if the speaker is removed from the AirTag. They will not be able to find the tag, and therefore may be inclined to then abandon the vehicle.
...
I've never used an AirTag. Are they like Tile trackers in that they need to be near someone with an iPhone (In Tile's case, the Tile app - Maybe the app even needs to be open) to "transmit" an accurate location?

Correct. Sounds like an unreliable method of tracking when you put it that way, but with the overwhelming prevalence of iPhones, at some point during it's journey (in the case of a theft) -- the AirTag is guaranteed to ping an apple device at least once long enough for you to get a fix on its position in time enough for you to react accordingly.

That is the beauty of The Internet of Things (IoT)

Do they still make the club? I haven’t heard of one since the 90s

I don't know. I saw this: amazon.com/gp/product/B0BRQ31KKM/ which is what prompted the question. (Fwiw, I'd probably see it as a challenge, ;) but I would also never steal a vehicle. ?‍♂)

Jeeps have an immobilizer. So the only way to get in it and start it up is this:
1. Have the key
2. Use a repeater and hope the key is within a few hundred feet

Also, being a manual does not keep it getting from being stolen. It's actually easier to get it up on a rollback or flat tow it over an automatic.

I suggest that you try to go out and steal your own Jeep without the key.

For the most part, just keep your vehicle out of sketchy areas and you'll be fine.
The underclass is mobile. What is safe in the morning might be sketchy during the afternoon/evening hours. That's been my experience in areas that were previously low/no risk. Unpacking this issue any further would require discussion of inconvenient truths, so I'll leave it at that.

Lol. When the piece of shit thieves have the same hardware for replicating keys as the dealer, they absolutely do not need the key that came with the Jeep. Its as simple as getting the VIN from A pillar, pulling horn and head unit fuse, punching passenger lock, connection to Star rail behind glovebox with dealer computer and create a key.
They're getting them in less than 5 minutes.

I agree with 2 things:
• Nothing will stop a determined thief.
• But, any and all deterrents will make them second guess and move onto easier targets if available.

For the most part, just keep your vehicle out of sketchy areas and you'll be fine.

One anecdote I can provide, unrelated to thievery... Ever since installing my rather obtrusive prerunner 'bull' bar, I've noticed the squirrely drivers are a lot less likely to cut me off in traffic. Does it still happen with idiots who love to take chances? Yes, but a whole lot less often now! Visual deterrents work, mostly.
These losers are pros. They're not jacking your car while you go buy a Monster drink. They're organised, carrying around a $5k key maker and hit the suburbs between 2-5am.

So I've heard. I'm in Ontario a lot unfortunately, which is really the only time I'm worried about theft. I know their favorite methods are to simply just steal right out of driveways.

I personally know a guy (non-Jeeper) in the GTA who had his catalytic converter stolen at noon in broad daylight while briefly parked in a Home Depot lot. He suggested I store my key in a faraday box when not in use to prevent it being cloned via frequency.

And as you know, the Ontario theft rings are extremely well-versed in swiping Jeeps. That being said, I'm on edge being parked anywhere out there seeing as a parked car is safe nowhere. Those scumbags are a different breed entirely.

Ya, they're not cloning keys but cant hurt lol.

Ya, I feel if this was a US issue, there would already be something done about it. Well that and the fact that the pieces of shit can die from stealing down there probably helps as well. Lol.
