I just picked up my Wrangler JLU on Friday. I feel really sorry for anyone who ordered one of these with an automatic transmission. The 6 speed is awesome! I have never encountered a manual transmission that was so smooth and simple to operate. With computerized fuel injection, the engine really responds to the manual transmission better than the carbureted engines I had in the Willys and CJ8. I'm so glad I picked the manual!

Glad you like it. There appear to be many opinions on the transmission choice. I picked the MT because I like manuals. I even prefer the manual in traffic, unlike many apparently. Its much easier for me to idle along in 2nd than the constant floor-it/slam on the brakes that I see so many folks using. I also have 3 kids, and figure at some point they may drive it and now I know their friends WON'T be driving it. ;)

Evidentally you didn't drive the new 8spd ZF auto--

It's pretty hard to beat for ease/speed/crawl ratio and a GODSEND in traffic-

It really lacks in engine braking on hills. Not for off roading, but on the highway.

Well, if you use the "MANUAL" control, or use "CRUISE CONTROL" the engine braking is THERE !

I can't think of any defect to this auto--and I imagine that it's possible/probable to be able to "JUMP START" using 4lo/1st with this AUTO--

Now I haven't doneit, but someone with this auto may join in and we'll find out

Both transmissions are fantastic IMO, I test drove both but went with the M/T JLUR out of personal preference. The A/T really zips and was impressive as well. Either way it's still a Jeep and kicks ass.

I think Jeep killed it with both of these transmissions combined with the PUG 3.6.

As for engine compression braking, though, if you have to do something to get it, doesn't that defeat the purpose of an automatic?;)

I'm just needling the auto folks a little. It truly is an exceptional transmission.

Well, all I know is that's it's NEW, with new gear ratios and because of 1st gear ratio----

In the RUBICON/w 4.10 diff. it produces a crawl ratio of 84/1, the highest "CRAWL RATIO" ever produced by JEEP--it is a tree climber/w short shifts--

I was dead set on a 6 speed. All of my jeeps have been manuals but they were toys and I didn’t have to drive them everyday. I really wanted a daily driver so when I went with the JLUR, my natural choice would have been 6 speed, but I also have issues with my right shoulder. Once reality set in, I had to go with an auto. With that being said, the autostick mode performs like it should. First vehicle I’ve had that will hold a gear no matter how much throttle input you give it. That really helped sweeten the deal for for as when crawling, I need it to be predictable.
