Don’t listen to @Chocolate Thunder I don’t wheel that hard. I won’t have my good buddy to wheel with so I always tend to stick to the easier stuff without him. We could definitely hit some mild stuff if you’re interested. One of my top goals for my JLUR is to not dent any body panels. That’s what my blazer crawler is for.
Sounds good. I will be down for whatever then. Schedule might get kinda hectic between work and an upcoming surgery hopefully in the near future though. Definitely down to go out when I can though.

I'm not too concerned with the Jeep handling things. It will always be above my skill. I just don't have much experience going out and using it. Definitely down to get better though.
Makes sense. The Softroaders club that's hosting the event I linked to is likely a good start - very unassuming, non-judgemental group that actually gets a kick helping beginners figure things out.

Also, many of the various parks will frequently host beginners or 101 classes, or can recommend a club who hosts similar events. You can watch all the YouTube videos you want but the best thing you can do is just get out there and try it.

Hidden Falls Adventure Park is maybe a good start - they have some extreme stuff, but they also have a lot of easy trails - more overlanding than rock crawling - that could get you started. Find a group and get dirty, my friend.

Tentative plan is to run the hill country overland trail June 9, then either run trails at K2 or WolfCaves June 10, then head home June 11. I plan to camp at one of those parks as they have nice facilities to shower. I’d like to run mild to moderate trails but willing to run whatever if someone decides to tag along.

It's been a few years since I talked to any of them but check with Kieth Jones with Jones Jeeps at the entrance to HF. They may still offer beginners classes. Keith is good teacher.

As much as I’d love to go, realistically it’s very doubtful that I’ll be able to. Dealing with health issues that I don’t see being resolved by that time. Have fun and stay safe guys.

My wife and I are really interested in doing this. We will need to Shuffle a couple things around, but will check on it.
So, you're looking at heading out Friday morning 06/09? Do you have a place in mind to meet up? I'll need to head that way on Thursday to be ready to go on Friday. Not sure if we'll do the Saturday run also. We'll have to see how that works out.
I believe @cornercanyon lives somewhere out in that area, so maybe he would be interested in doing this also. Keep us posted.

thanks to @B_AIRS post with the map. I didn’t think anyone was interested in joining. My current plan was to leave home early morning Friday since it’s a 5 hour drive for me to Fredericksburg. I was considering a run to the Garrison Distillery at 10 am to check it out and have lunch there. Then running the overland trail around 3 pm from Fredericksburg to Mason with the James River crossing (I’m waiting to see how it looks with the group doing the run this weekend to see if the depth should be any concern with the recent rains.) But I could also possibly run the trail mid morning 10/11 depending on my drive time and try to hit the Distillery for a mid afternoon tour. What would be a good time frame for you to run it? I’d prefer to run the trail mid afternoon so that I can finish in Mason and head to Katemcy after but flexible and don’t have anything set in stone yet. I just want to clarify I’ve never run this trail but I have a lot of four wheeling experience.

I haven't run it since my original post a couple years ago, but you guys shouldn't have anything to worry about running this. Other than the river crossing it is all well graded dirt road and back-country paved roads from Fredericksburg to Mason. It is more of a scenic drive than a trail in my opinion.

I wish I could join you all, especially at Katemcy.

How’s the service out there? I live in a metro area down in south texas and constantly have poor service with Verizon. A little worried I’ll lose service and have difficulty navigating the map or was it pretty much a point and drive trail?

If you're trying to do the trail in the afternoon I could possibly make it on that Friday, Saturday would be no issue.
I’d prefer to do Friday afternoon so I could hit some granite trails Saturday. I’m just not sure how Hydros timeline looks.

Service was definitely spotty in places. I would suggest downloading that area’s data for use offline in Google maps. That way even if you loose service the satellite connection will still show you where you are.

I'd like to do whats on that map above. The Hill County is my backyard. I live close to Bulverde, so getting to places like Fredericksburg only takes about an hour or so.

The only problem is planning in advance. usually when I'm able to break away it's short notice.
