Hey guys and gals, just a quick question for ya. I have the oem rubicon skids and they’ve taken a beating over the last few years. They have some pretty good scrapes in them and I don’t have the money to buy new ones right now so I’d prefer to refinish them just so they don’t start to rust. Has anyone done this before and if so, do you have tips? Also I’ve seen spraying them with bed liner is apparently a thing.

I usually just use VHT chassis spray in gloss under the jeep on the various skids, and on the bumper skid the mopar metal bumper group gets a coat or two of rustoleum. Gonna experiment with a matte clear coat next time over that coat to see if I can get it lasting longer though.

Take them off. Only a few bolts. Clean them up good. Sand any rough/rusty spots and then respray with whatever you want. I’ve used bedliner and straight up Rattle can and just redo as necessary

I take a wire brush to the scrape to remove any surface rust, then spray with Rustoleum Bedliner. It’s a little glossier than the textured black from the factory, but it will fade to match quickly in the sun and the texture is almost identical.

Works for the steel bumpers and rock sliders.

My skids take a real beating as well. Most of the time, I'll just clean them off and apply RustOleum semi-gloss brush-on oil based paint. It works great with minimal preparation.
