I think this is engine braking. I have felt the same thing. Did not think anything of it.

My transmission has been shockingly smooth at 500 miles. I planned on a jerky acclimation to the 8-speed but have been thoroughly impressed.

If it is bucking bad enough to make you hit the headrests thatā€™s not a normal downshift or engine braking. My guess would be a solenoid valve ..grand cherokees with our shared transmissions had this issue. However, Iā€™m not a mechanic and would definitely recommend a dealer trip for shifting issues this early on. Hope itā€™s nothing serious and just learning your driving style!! Let us know what happens.

My auto transmission is having a shifting issue from 2nd gear to 1st gear when slowing to a stop. Itā€™s smooth right up to that point then it makes a very hard shift into 1st gear (the whole Jeep lurches forward). It seems to happen the most when the auto start/stop is off and the engine is warm. Itā€™s not every time but very frequently. Took it to dealer, on the printout then said they couldnā€™t replicate the issue but in a text they said the tech felt it happen but said it is normal for an 8 speed transmission.
Any thoughts or similar issues from anyone?
I know exactly what youā€™re talking about. It happens to me every day when I go home. Iā€™m headed down hill to a stop sign and going really slow, 25mph and under. Right before the stop sign it wil abruptly down shift to first. I assumed that 1st gear in the Rubi was excessively low on purpose for when youā€™re off road. This is also my first Jeep with 4.10 gears, I thought that might be it also. Anyway, I think itā€™s normal.

Have you tried disconnecting negative terminal to clear the learned driving shift points? Maybe something to try first.

I had that issue with my '15 Grand Cherokee.

Hey Andrew,

I'm sorry to hear about the shifting concern you're experiencing in your Wrangler. Are you thinking you'd like to get a second opinion. Although we're not trained technicians, we're available via direct message and would be glad to forward your inquiry to a Case Specialist.

This is FCA's service department battle mantra. I get this answer every time for over a decade.

This is a problem that's been around with this 8spd forever but I will say mine is the best 8spd yet out of 3 vehicles.

I definitely need a second opinion.... the car jumping forward when coming to a stop is not safe
Doesn't sound right. Take it to the dealer and demonstrate it for them.

Thats pretty normal for that transmission. My JL does it and our Grand Cherokee with the same 8 speed does it. Just good 'ol Jeep quality.

Yup, same. My 18 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk was identical as described by OP. I never cared and drove it without issue. After trading in for my JLUR, I haven't experienced anything period.

I picked up my 2018 JL Rubicon automatic 2 weeks ago and am having the same downshifting problem when coming to a stop. I have owned a lot of Jeeps in the past, Grand Cherokees, Wranglers- 6 speed manuals and automatics, and this 2018 automatic is NOT downshifting/slowing down properly. I never had this issue in my Grand Cherokee with the same 8 speed auto trans.
I will be visiting my local CDJ dealer this week to review the problem with the service manager.

Yup. My transmission refused to go into gear at a stoplight yesterday. Totally locked up. Dealership told me it needs to be totally replaced. !!

I have a JL Rubicon 1000k Miles and itā€™s doing the same thing. Doesnā€™t do it all the time but once it starts itll keep doing it the rest of the day. Feels like the acceleration is off. Like a go cart with a carburetor problem. When youā€™re coming to a stop it, even with the brake slightly pressed it trys to take off and when your cruising like 30 MPH itā€™ll choke and then take off. All happens within a second
