Hello,

FNG here. I am looking to trade my 2020 RAM for a JLU. My wife and I no longer need the truck. Her daily driver is 2020 JLU Rubicon which is a fantastic vehicle. I enjoy driving it on occasion. My question is this: Which one would be the 'best deal' for someone who would be using the Jeep as a daily driver and mainly does light off roading up around logging areas and would be taking the Jeep out clamming on the beaches. Possible towing a small utility trailer as well.

Option 1: 2022 Willy's JLU with the 3.0 liter diesel. It has the 26W pkg with the anti-spin, LED headlights and fog lights and hard top. Price is $50,040

Option 2: 2022 Rubicon JLU with the 2.0L gas motor. It has the 8.4" radio and premium group, off road plus mode, F&R lockers, halogen headlights. Price is $50,755.

I am really torn between the two. I am leaning toward the Rubicon but the the Diesel and the LED headlights on the Willys are causing me pause. $50,000 is around my budget. I am soliciting advice. Please feel free to chime in.

I assume these are on the lot?

Have you considered ordering utilizing the affiliate discount via Tread Lightly (or another discount dealer route)? Should be able to get at least 1% off invoice and custom order.

I have a Sahara with the diesel and kind of had the same questions, but love the engine and the limited slip is plenty for most of what I do. If you will ever tow, the diesel is the deal and way smoother and less engine noise.

If you don't have any intention of going to a trail to use 4LO on purpose, then I'd just go with the Willys as you would not need the 4:1 transfer case and lockers.

If you drive in snow on a regular basis, get the Willys.

Good luck.

If you don't need it "today", then order a Rubicon with LED and diesel. Probably still right around budget and when spending that much, just get what you want!

Enjoy the new Jeep!

Thank you for the feedback.

The answers to the questions posed would be:

These Jeeps are both on the dealers lot

I never thought of ordering

I wouldn't be doing anything hardcore. It would be primarily used on logging roads in the summer and in the snow during Elk season and late buck.

If I just had to have a locker I am guessing I can add them later ($$$)

Thanks again,
Wayne

There just such different builds it's hard to give you a straight answer. If you can wait a couple months for it, I'd definitely recommend a custom build.

If both were gas, another plus to the Rubi would be 4.10 gears, beefier front axle, push button sway bar disconnect (great for comfort on logging roads).

The LEDs are great, it'd be tough for me to get a halogen one.

The tops are also a significant difference if I'm reading right, hard top vs soft top both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'd assume you have a preference from your experience with your wife's.

The diesel in this case makes a big difference, and is a big reason the Willy's is run up to the cost of the Rubi.

Thanks GATORB8.

Actually, both have hard tops. I definitely wanted the freedom hard top. I have attached the window stickers in case anyone is interested.

To give you some idea, with an order, you should be able to get at least 1% under invoice. Invoice on the Willy's would be $47,963, so right around $47,500. Invoice on the Rubi would be $48,272, so $47,800.

Note, neither appear to have the tow group, which includes the hitch, wiring, and the aux switches (plus upsized electrical). So you'll need to add that aftermarket (either Mopar or others).

I like the idea of the increased torque provided by the diesel. Also, there have been many great reports of the capability of the Willys with the LSD axle on here and elsewhere. My preference would be the Willys.

I’m going to give you a long-winded answer. Buy what you want, not what the dealership is selling. Dealerships order vehicles to put on the lots that maximize profit. They order vehicles and convince customers that’s what they want, or need, because they make more money. What that does is increase your cost, and their profit. Another thing it does that no one really thinks of, is it creates the false impression that people want all the gadgets and doo-hickeys.

NEVER buy off the dealer lot. ALWAYS order your vehicle spec’d the way you want it. It’s like going to a place that only sells combo meals when you’re thirsty. All you want is a medium Coke. The dealer will sell you a Coke, but it comes with a large order of fries and a cheeseburger, and it’s way more expensive than the medium Coke you really wanted. And all you really wanted was something to drink, but you drive away with a payment plan and some greasy food that stinks up the car and doesn’t even taste good. But, for some reason, you think you had to buy it.

My 2022 two-door Rubicon is $39,800.

From what dealer? I paid $43K for my 2021 JLR 2.0 turbo, auto, body hardtop, aux switches, trailer tow package, SS sill guards, remote keyless. But I've got to sell it and get a 2022 JLR with front camera. I ordered mine is Spokane, WA.

honestly it isn't to bad of a decision either way but to me sounds like the Willys 3.0 package is what would work for you. I do believe all the 3.0 get the heavy duty front axle due to the torque output. You also get 3.73 gear ratio that fits the 3.0 very nicely. the only difference is the amount of DEF you have to use $$$ and the extra cost on oil changes $$$. If you don't mind the extra small cost of maintenance and DEF juice fill ups then this is the route to go for you. The anti spin is better in the snow than lockers in my experience. best of luck. Dont forget it you are not in a rush then ordering is still cheaper than buying off the lot.

Note. you can add LED bulbs from Amazon for 30 bucks. I did this to get ride of the halogens two and a half years go and they're still working just fine.
