So, I'm about to take my new Jeep in for its first complimentary oil change and tire rotation.

I happened to ask them if they rotate all five tires or just the four on the ground. They replied it's my choice, 4-tire rotation or 5-tire rotation.

Well, I can easily think up why I might want a 5-tire rotation but the fact that they offer a choice instead of a recommendation made me wonder if there are owners who opt for only a 4-tire rotation, and why.

I notice the 2024 Wrangler Owners manual only mentions the 4-tire rotation:

Jeep Wrangler JL Question on 1st Tire Rotation Tire rotation from 2024 wrangler owners manual

Seems odd to me that they do not discuss a 5-tire rotation.

I read in another thread of someone who did the 4-tire rotation and wanted to change to 5-tire rotation but was told if his four tires had, say, 20,000 miles on them, it was too late to bring in the 5th tire. Too late? Okay, but does that consign the 5th tire to serve only as a temporary spare?

Anyway, I wonder is anyone has wisdom about any of this, 4-tire versus 5-tire rotation, and maybe why the manual would only advise on 4-tire rotation.

Thanks.

To my rookie mind the rotation is to make for even wear on the tires you use all the time. The tire on the back is supposed to be a spare, not an everyday tire. putting it into the rotation only complicates things.

by keeping the rotation to the 4 you always use you assure even wear.

I see what you mean. I guess I remember seeing 5-tire rotation charts from years ago.

Good question. Every vehicle has a spare tire not just Jeeps. Understandably some are skinny donut’s but, let’s say full size trucks with standard spares. I’ve never heard of a 5 tire rotation on them?

5 tire rotations on Wranglers, are recommended every 5000 miles.
Recommended where in print? And by whom? The Owners Manual Chart says only this for every 10,000 miles:

Rotate the tires. Rotate at the first sign of irregular wear, even if it occurs before scheduled maintenance.

I note that if I rotated all 5 with every 6-month oil change, I'd be doing what you said was recommended. But would still like to know whose recommendation that is, at variance with the Owners Manual.

There’s a couple reasons guys do 5 tire rotation, one is you get 20% more wear on all the tires…. Another reason is, it sits in the weather/sunlight, and dry rot is a concern…. Me personally, I do a 5 tire rotation because I want to go to 38s next set, up from 37s and I want to wear them all out…..not because of these other reasons…..You do whichever way you want to, it’s not as big of a deal as some would have you believe…..

5 tire rotation if you have a full sized spare…which you do. Tire rotation every 6 months or 6k miles minimum for longer life and more even wear. If you off road aired down on more than a dirt road and you have accelerated wear on the shoulder of the tire, 5000 or less is not unreasonable. Just my non-expert opinion which you didn’t ask for.

On your Wrangler do a five tire always. That way you don't leave the spare hanging out to sun rot and be unusable down the road. If you stay stock put the best one on the spare and buy four new ones when you buy new tires. Of course, if you change sizes on the second set ignore this reply. Do the math. A five tire rotation gets you more miles than a four tire rotation. Otherwise, you have four new tires with a "maypop" spare.

In 2017, I bought a 1982 Toyota FJ40 with a spare tire date code of 2005. Even though the four on the ground were newer, I had to buy five new tires rather than four. Again, do the math.

Well, I have a tire cover on my spare. Does that make a difference to what you said about sun rot?
