When I went to my local Discount Tire they wouldn't do a 5 tire rotation and said a 4 tire rotation was standard...
Local DT just did mine. Asked if I wanted 4 or 5. Said 5, done while I went for a cup of coffee. Even marked/chalked the one headed for the spare.

My take is, unless you're talking about a significant difference in tread, more than 4 or 5/32 IMO, you're worrying a bunch over nothing.
I used the mm scale on my tread depth gauge, and the front left was 12mm and the other 3 were 9mm. The spare read 12mm, so I plan on putting it on the back with the front left tire. Then move the backs to the front. That would leave the front right becoming the spare.

One thing to do is pick a pattern and stick with it. I actually have saved a PDF file of my rotation and print one out so I can date it, write down the tire pressures, check the depth gauge of each tire, and then check each of them off while doing the rotation.

Of course the Jeep is on 4 good Jack Stands, and I’m doing a detail and inspection of the parts, chassis and possible rust issues. The Wheels and tires get the full clean also. I go through a can of Fluid Film each time I do this.

Stick with a pattern. Put a copy in the glove box. I have a Sunex tire caddy that I use to lift the wheel to the hub so that I don't have to wrestle with lifting the heavy tire and lining up the studs. The rear spare is the only heavy lift and don't scratch your backup camera.

Hmmm...That's odd. We apologize for your recent experience. We would like to look further in to this to make sure you're taken care of. Hope you don't mind us sending a DM.

I’m lazy and have a tool addiction problem.
In the garage, I use this to lower the spare…

I took mine in to @Discount Tire on Saturday for my first rotation at 6k miles on this set and spec'd a 5 tire rotation, 29psi, black wheel weights and keep the valve stem up on the spare (backup sensor issues). All items were noted on my printout. They got the valve stem up as requested, and the black wheel weights but the rear 2 tires had about 34psi and the fronts had 31-32psi. Not a big deal, I'll just let a little out. As I was doing so this evening, I noticed that my spare tire (which was brand new, so very easy to tell) had been placed on the driver's rear instead of the passenger rear which would be consistent with the standard 5-tire rearward cross. I'm quite annoyed, as there's now no way to tell what tire was where or to know what type of pattern they actually used, aside from a random one as it seems.

I know, I know... do your own work. This is exactly why I do, 99.9999% of the time!!! I don't, however, have a tire balancer, and this service is included with my tire purchase there (and needs to be documented for tire warranty purposes), so I let them do it. Guess I'm gonna have to mark the tires from now on and watch them work a bit closer....

Standard if you want a useless spare…..so lazy
20% of the life of your tires, just by not using the 5th.

Just be sure to stick with one pattern.
If you go to Discount, I'm sure they have their own specific 5 tire pattern.
If you DIY, just DIY the same pattern every time.
Rearward Cross for me.

According to the Discount Tire website they show the standard rearward cross for a 5 tire rotation.

We greatly apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. If it's not to much trouble, a return visit to the store would allow them to verify the pattern used and correct anything if necessary. We do appreciate your business and strive to deliver a world class experience with every customer interaction. Let us know if there is anything we can do from here on the forum.

@Discount Tire, thank you for responding. I was in the area yesterday so I stopped back by and asked about it, they went back and pulled the slip from the work being done. I was impressed to see that they actually record how the rotation was done and at least based on the spare location it seems to match so I have that info now.

I don't quite understand why they did it the way they did though, as in the reading I've done online virtually no one suggests a clockwise rotation like they did. I think I'm going to pull them and move them into the positions that the rearward cross rotation would put them. Considering the rear right tire should theoretically wear the fastest, that makes more sense on where the brand new spare should go to try and match the other wear.

Below is a pic of my slip that they showed me.

Also, oddly enough, I just took a look at my owner's manual and it has zero mention of a 5 tire rotation and only shows the 4 tire rearward cross as the recommended rotation pattern.
