Oil usage....

I have a catch can. I maintain it and the level on my dipstick goes from top of hash marks to bottom of hash marks in 7-10k mile change intervals.

I really haven't had a vehicle in modern times lol that moved much on the dipstick in 5-7k miles oil changes so I added the catch can to this one mainly because of the poor CCV system on the 3.6l.

Just to note, I DO live at altitude and go up/down for long periods at rpm levels that sea level living people might never see and have 5.13 gears... so yeah, sometimes I'm at 4krpm for an hour driving etc...

My little 3.6 gets what you call severe use. If I just puttered around town for 10k miles it would prob be MUCH less.

I had to add 1/2 a quart or 16 ounces. I understand you are going to lose some oil during the combustion process, but I don't want to put as much as I fear is going down the intake.I have run external breather systems on a few Harleys with good results. I'm hoping this situation stops with more miles.Hoping to see an improvement with a thousand more miles.

oil in the intake is normal and has no deleterious effect whatsoever.

If it was out of the catch can, its most likely mostly condensation. Im willing to bet that you arent loosing any oil or not much by the dipstick.

It could be a combo. It sure does look and has the consistency of oil though.

It does have some oil in it for sure. With the oil we using being thin anyway, it doesnt look much different that water out of the jug anyway. Next time you get ready to dump it, check your oil and see if you have lost as much as your pouring out. Im almost willing to bet you arent loosing any. Like I said, I have ran catch cans for years in other applications. Never lost a drop of oil but I sure did pour stuff out.

3.6 oil usage.2021 3.6 with 1,950 miles.First oil change 1000 miles 0W20 Pennzoil Platinum zero usage.Checked at 1,950 and one half a quart down.Not really worried but watching.I will be concerned if if it keeps this up.Any input as to similar results.

Don't sweat it, I've observed the same thing, and it gets better as you go along... I currently have 11 K miles w/ 3 oil changes-- 1st one at 1K, the next two at 5K intervals.

At 1K miles I was down 1/2 qt. At 5K miles on the second oil change, I was down 1 qt. At 5K miles on the third change, I was down absolutely nothing, and the waste oil looked almost new.

Compared to 40 years ago, modern oils are phenomenal. It literally takes 10K miles for your engine to fully seat in (if you don't beat it).

As in all things. The 3.6 simply does not have an oil consumption issue, ever, and a catch can is ONLY useful for two things:

1. Minimizing oil consumption due to severe angles off road
2. Separating fools from their money

No.....Oil consumption varies,and if all oil introduced into the intake could be eliminated it would be for the better as far as combustion.Do not confuse EPA considerations with the efficiency of combustion and the wellbeing of internal combustion engines. Engineering compensates for the best most cost-effective solution to a mandate. Clean air introduced to the intake wins every time.

Lol.....You make valid points.I went over the whole jeep yesterday.I found no leaks.In my view the next few thousand miles will tell the tale.The oil consumption could very well stop or be greatly reduced.If however the Jeep continues to lose a 1/2 quart a thousand miles.I will put a can on and collect what comes out in a five thousand mile cycle.At that point I can see if the can was justified.Thank you for your contribution and obvious knowledge you provide on this forum.

My catch can resolved 80% of my pre-ignition issues. I don't need to add a bottle of what you would call 'snake oil' anymore.

It actually worked to reduce carbon buildup.. imagine that....
