emissions standards, of course. They had pretty much nailed it with the addition of mechanically variable valve timing and electronically adjusted spark timing, then it got more strict and manufacturers had to add another layer of reduction, and they for some reason went with the EGR valve and added a cooler on it. I don’t know of any prior gas powered American vehicles that had an EGR cooler.Oh my, I fought a faulty EGR on my 1994 mustang GT early on in this 'green' battle that it appears we're still losing 30 years later LOL Replaced it, it failed, replace it, it failed the entire time I owned the car. Won't even mention my '74 firebirds issues.. why are still fighting the same battle?
