new I6 vs old V6

okay, so yes i understand horsepower can be a good thing but i have a thought…

every time i read something about the V6, everyone always says, “there’s 2.2 gazillion made” and that they are tried and true. “a solid workhorse”. etc. i also hear in reference to turbos - “the turbo just adds more crap to go wrong” and “simple is better”. lastly, everyone says don’t buy first year productions. so keeping all of this in mind, why is it that when an I6 thread comes out, everyone can’t wait for it to make its way into a wrangler?? the only thing i can put together is that the increased HP is worth the risk of having a first year turbo engine? correct???

keep in mind, i’m not for or against an I6 engine, i’m just making an observation resulting in a question.

The quicker it is released the faster they can start working out the bugs if any should arise. The I6 should have a great power band with smooth power and nice torque down low with the turbo and power throughout its range.
The V6 is great for what it is and I have had many but I’d love a turbo I6 in the Jeep. Ever driven a BMW with their I6? I have owned a few and I love them.

In these days of I.C.E, nothing is simple. The Pentastar has been around a long time, and it seems to be a reliable unit. My work van is a 2017 Caravan GT with the 3.6 and it has 241K on it with only 1 issue other than regular maintenance (Lifter issue).
Turbos create more pressure, and more heat. While it is just another component Id prefer a old school straight 6 myself, but most of those are long gone.

If I was unhappy with my 3.6, I would trade into a wrangler with the new turbo I6 when available. Also, If I were to buy a first year production of any engine, Id spring for the extended warranty, just to cover myself in the event you have a lot of first year issues.

Im among those happy to see new options. More-so because im a wrangler fan and like to keep up to date with advances and information.

Can anyone point to any information from a reliable source that indicates that the new twin turbo inline 6 is going into the Wrangler?

I don't see it happening. It's rated for too much power and the photos I've seen off it show a lot of plumbing that would be hard to shove into the Wrangler engine bay.

Correct!!! Plus it’s already offered for Wagoneers, GC and others to come. Bugs should get sorted out before available for Wranglers. Although with Ford releasing a 2.3L Bronco tune raising HP/TQ to 315-410 and 2.7L tune likely to follow just might give Jeep the incentive to expedite a 400HP Wrangler option.

Well— they said a V8 wouldn’t fit, until Ford gave them the incentive. But you are probably right, JL’s won’t get it, JM’s will be designed for it. Just another wild guess. ?

Ill definitely be interested in the new i6 after it has been out for a couple years. The advertised power numbers are pretty impressive. I have a feeling it will be in the next gen Jeep though. Probably for 2025. Should be interesting.

If that turns out to be the case I'll get one in 2028 or so. We'll see.

Wranglers usually run a span of about 10yrs before a new generation comes out so if you are waiting for the next gen it may not be until 2027-28

If they release a naturally aspirated (non turbo) version, it may fit. Somewhere around 290 HP would be perfect. Then there would be no need to fit the turbos and all of the related duct work and cooling. But, a high revving, DOHC inline 6 will be nothing like the old 4.0 pushrod engine.

I think they designed it for the turbo. They have plenty of high volume options for lower horsepower engines so no reason to detune it, you'd just loose economy of scale.

Not that it fits with the lack of civility of the rest of the Jeep, a straight six (and a V12) is the smoothest cylinder configuaration there is - with the possible exception of a Wankel.
