When I go in for my next oil change I am leaving it so they can do any TSB’s or recalls addressed and also have my batteries checked as the voltage seems to be running high all the time, I figure have it all done at once so I don’t have to keep going back.

Is the any way for you to ask someone who is more familiar with this TSB since you are close to corporate than the dealers are? 99% of the time the dealers aren't even aware of a TSB until customers print it and show it to them (tons of examples of this in the JL forum). And since they never heard of this TSB (I called 3 dealers out of curiosity, all 3 said there was no such TSB). I did ask 1 of the 3 after giving them the TSB number so they could look it up and they said they had no clue which fan noise it is supposed to fix. They were so clueless they said "what loud fan noise on the JL?" Seriously? Anyway, can you ask the question below to get clarity? You can copy/paste it.

Question: "TSB 18-041-18 Rev B states 'Excessive blower fan noise when the A/C is on MAX output.' Does this address the A) loud engine A/C fan in the engine compartment near the radiator that sounds like a loud shopvac when the A/C is on Max or B) is it related to the blower motor in the passenger cabin under the dash that pushes the air in the vents?"

Answer: A or B

Thanks for your help.
Hi jeremyjeep,

After further discussion with an internal resource, it has been confirmed that the answer is B. It is related to the blower motor excessive noise, not the engine cooling fan. I apologize for any confusion.

Loud Fan Test

It would be interesting to hear back from a few different people on this question based on the different weather temperatures around the country: With the engine still cold (fresh start up), your AC is on, and you crank your AC to max, does the external engine cooling fan go into scream mode (very loud), no matter what the outside temperature is? If yes, please post here with what the outside temperature is during this test. If no, still please post that result as well.

I had 18-041-18 Rev B software update applied. External engine cooling fan is now quiet. Before the update, the second I started up my JL no matter what the outside temp is and crank the A/C to max, the external engine cooling fan screams (as expected). Obviously the engine isn't even warm yet, so not sure why it is screaming loud, there is nothing to cool yet. I arrived at the dealership 8:30am, outside temp was 71 here. While I am waiting in line, under the service awning, I crank up the A/C and everyone, customers, service advisors, etc. stares because of the screaming external cooling fan. I was prepping them for the "your VIN isn't on the list" scenario. It wasn't on the list (surprise), had to get the service manager to override and apply it any way.

At 11:30am, it was 82 degrees when they finish with the oil change and software update (they are super slow, takes 3 hours to change oil and apply a 2 minute flash update). I cranked the A/C to max, the engine cooling fan is not loud at all. Tech confirmed it. About 33% quieter. I let the JL idol in the dealership parking lot for about 10 minutes after they returned it to me, cranked the A/C to max, fan is still quiet. Appears to be fixed. Drove it home, 40 minutes away, still quiet when I arrive. But now, I read this response from JeepCares and they say the TSB fixes the internal A/C duct fan, not the engine cooling fan. Seriously? Either JeepCares was misinformed or mine magically fixed itself on its own. Ugh. The sound from the internal AC blower inside the JL is the same as before when it is at max. And why would they fix the internal fan when most are complaining about the external engine cooling fan?

Another JL owner confirmed the fix here: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/a-c-fan-noise-is-gone.17671/#post-431290

Cooling fan also cools your A/C Freon. Turn off A/C, & sweat.

I too just had the 18-041-18 Rev B software update applied today at my local dealer. I can also confirm it does reduce the exterior cooling fan volume to a normal level. FINALLY!!

The interior blower fan volume was unchanged and remains a normal volume like it always was.

@Gman53

I had the 18-041-18 Rev. B. update done on 11/8/18. Was in NY where it was cold so did not known if the update did the job lets say..... Anyway, I have been in Florida now for a week, and I can confirm as you, it worked. Also smoothed out the idle.

Anyone get over heating issues with this update? I just had it done, 1st time off roading since, it was 65-70 deg F, the fan hardly ever turned on. Which was great until the water temp got to 260, fan never turned on. We got it off the trail, I must say not being able to coast down a mountain with engine off was never so annoying, called for road side that was 90 min away.

We had a few barely pops waiting and tried to drive it again after it cooled off, it got back to 240 then all of a sudden the jet fan turned on again and all was good.

I am supposed to leave for EJS Saturday, any ideas as expect my dealer to only make it worse or tell it will be months to get a part.

Is the fan on a self resetting relay? Or maybe one got jarred loose off roading?

I couldn’t find a fuse for it.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the whiners who complained about the noise of the fan. Thanks to you, the latest software update the dealership did now killed my A/C performance.

Whereas last summer my JLU would cool off quickly inside, now it struggles to keep up on a 85 degree humid afternoon. When it's 95-100 it's going to SUCK this summer.

I wish there was a way to un-do this software update. FUNCTION OVER FORM people. A little extra noise is worth the trade-off for better performance, which is why the fan was loud to begin with. Millennials have a way of killing everything that's good in life.

FYI my overheating was more to do with air pocket that sucked in due to the dealer cross threading the coolant cap..
